Job description
What's the role? The Australian is seeking an ambitious and energetic reporter to strengthen the masthead’s coverage of the banking and financial services sector — one of the country’s most critical and closely-watched industries. This role is ideal for an early-to-mid-career journalist with a proven track record of breaking news and delivering sharp, well-researched stories.
We are looking for someone with a keen eye for exclusives, a strong understanding of banking, finance and regulation, and a collaborative mindset to work closely with The Australian ’s Business Editor and wider Business team. If you are passionate about covering everything from the country’s major banks and emerging financial players to the intersection of finance, policy and regulation — and telling compelling stories that matter to investors, policymakers and business leaders — we would love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
Break news and deliver authoritative coverage of Australia’s banking sector, including regulatory actions, major deals, executive moves, and policy developments impacting the financial system. Report on a broad range of financial institutions, such as retail and investment banks, superannuation funds, and fintech firms, with clear, accessible financial reporting and analysis.
Create engaging, multi-platform journalism—from digital and print to podcasts and video—filing clean, reader-focused stories with sharp headlines and strong news value. Develop original, subscriber-focused stories that go beyond the news cycle, while managing multiple assignments and delivering timely, insightful company and sector coverage.
Collaborate across the newsroom and support the Business Editor, including newsletter contributions, long-form assignments, and occasional Sunday shifts as part of a roster. Who are you? At least three years’ proven journalism experience with a demonstrated ability to break stories. A good understanding of how to source information from courts, regulators, and financial filings.
A strong commitment to building a network of contacts and generating original story ideas. The ability to work calmly to tight deadlines, strong news judgement and the ability to work independently while taking direction. Prior experience reporting on banking, finance, or business news. A digital-first approach to journalism and excellent attention to detail.
This includes search engine optimisation tools, planning display elements such as pictures and custom thumbnails, organising and listing planned stories appropriately. A strong interest in banking, financial markets, economic policy, or the ability to develop expertise quickly.
