Head Custodian � Facilities Lewiston Public Schools Job Title Head Custodian Department Facilities Reports To Facilities Supervisor/Director Approved By J. Langlais, Superintendent Effective Date 10/2/2026 Status Full-time, hourly Pay Range $19.49 - $22.60 per hour Position Summary The Head Custodian keeps the district's buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

The Head Custodian directs custodial staff in the assigned building, serves as the point of contact for administration and staff, performs custodial and preventive maintenance work, and carries out required building safety checks. Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, on the assigned shift and according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule.

This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. The Head Custodian may also be required to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for building emergencies, alarms, and snow and ice removal so schools can open safely and on time. Regular, predictable attendance is required, including summer work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned. Leadership and coordination Instruct custodians, verbally and in writing, on building and grounds work, custodial tasks, and routine preventive maintenance. Help supervise the custodial staff in the building. Help the Facilities Director and Facilities Supervisor assign and schedule additional time for custodians.

Serve as the point of contact for administration and staff. Coordinate snow and ice removal so schools can open safely and on time after each storm, calling in custodians as needed. Check all areas of the building for proper cleaning and maintenance, and notify the Facilities Supervisor of any areas below standard. Cover all areas of the building when a custodian is out sick or on vacation and no substitute is available.

Submit time sheets to the Facilities Supervisor accurately and on time. Custodial and maintenance work Clean and maintain designated spaces and equipment in the building. Perform ongoing preventive maintenance, and submit School. Dude work orders for larger and minor repairs to plumbing, custodial equipment, building structure, and hardware.

Perform normal operator adjustments and service on facility equipment, such as compressors, heating systems, unit ventilators, and fans, and keep records of operation and maintenance. Monitor fuel oil levels to keep them safe in certain areas, such as modular classrooms. Keep custodial cleaning equipment in good and safe working order.

Maintain the inventory of custodial and maintenance supplies and equipment. Rake, sweep, shovel snow, and keep grounds and grounds equipment clean. In some schools, such as Lewiston High School, operate a forklift to unload delivery trucks. Security, safety, and compliance Maintain building and grounds security. Maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) notebook to ensure compliance with state and federal law.

Take part in the Integrated Pest Management Program by providing follow-up reports on pest sightings, trap monitors, and pest activity. Conduct required safety checks: Monthly fire extinguisher check Monthly exit light check Monthly emergency light check Monthly eyewash station check Playground safety check Public use of facilities Assist members of the public using the facilities with directions and with obtaining, setting up, and taking down needed equipment.

Education

and/or experience High school diploma or GED Two years of experience as a custodian preferred Ability to pass a district written and physical test Forklift operator training and certification, where forklift operation is required (or willingness to obtain it) Available and able to work 5 days per week on the assigned shift, and to be on call as required Language skills Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of employees and members of the public. Supervisory skills Supervise four or more individuals. Mathematical skills Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rates, ratios, and percentages, and draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning ability Solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Interpret instructions given in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Other skills and abilities Use a personal computer, including email and the School. Dude work order system.

Build effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.

Compensation

and Benefits Hourly pay ranges from $19.49 - $22.60. Use close, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee works mainly indoors and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow and cold. The employee works near or with moving mechanical equipment and may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays, following safety data sheets and required personal protective equipment.

The employee must be able to meet deadlines under tight time constraints and respond to building emergencies. The noise level is usually moderate.
