Job description
Instrumentum is hiring Sterile Processing Technicians II for a new site we're standing up at a partner hospital in the Richmond, VA area. $30–$40/hour, depending on experience. 9 openings across day, evening, and night shifts. This team is being built from the ground floor — you'd help set how it runs. New sites don't open often.
Joining one early means more say in how the department runs than you'd typically get on an established team: how trays move through the day, what the schedule looks like when things get busy, who gets asked first when something needs fixing. If you want responsibility sooner rather than later, this is where you'd get it.
The job This Technician II role builds on core decontamination, assembly, and sterilization skills to take on quality inspection, documentation, and instrument-tracking work, and includes mentoring newer Technicians on the team. Single site, no travel.
What you will do
● Receive, decontaminate, inspect, assemble, sterilize, package, and ship instruments, building case carts to established protocols ● Conduct in-process and final quality checks for cleanliness, functionality, and damage before packaging ● Identify, document, and escalate non-conforming instruments or quality deviations per SOPs ● Keep accurate, timely records of sterilization cycles, biological monitoring, and instrument tracking ● Operate washers, sterilizers, and related equipment safely, and handle routine maintenance per manufacturer instructions ● Mentor and train newer Sterile Processing Technicians as a site preceptor What you need ● High school diploma or equivalent ● CRCST (HSPA) or CSPDT (CBSPD) certification — if you're not yet certified, you'll have 90 days from your start date to get there ● Able to meet the physical demands of the role (below), with or without reasonable accommodation ● Open to working any of three shifts: days, evenings, or nights What we would like to see ● 2+ years of hands-on sterile processing experience ● Prior quality control or instrument tracking/logistics experience ● An advanced certification such as CIS (HSPA) or CSIS (CBSPD) ● An associate or bachelor's degree in a related field Who does well here People who catch a flawed tray before it leaves the room, document what they find without waiting to be asked, and don't mind being on their feet for most of a shift.
The physical side of the job This is a clinical/production environment — climate-controlled, with regular PPE use and frequent exposure to biohazardous materials and strong chemical odors. ● Standing for most of the shift; limited sitting ● Lifting up to 30 lbs regularly, 31–50 lbs often, and occasional lifting over 50 lbs with team-lift support or equipment (pushing/pulling up to 450 lbs with cart assistance) ● Occasional kneeling, crouching, bending, and twisting ● Required vaccinations and health screenings ● Reasonable accommodation is available to help you perform the essential functions of this role Pay and benefits ● $30–$40/hour, depending on experience ● Medical, dental, and vision insurance, effective the first of the month after your start date ● Company-paid life insurance, plus short- and long-term disability ● Flexible Spending Account (FSA) ● 401(k) with company match — 50% on the first 2% you contribute, eligible from day one ● Paid time off starting at 10 days and growing with tenure, accruing from day one ● 9 paid holidays, plus 1.
5× pay and 8 hours of PTO if you choose to work one (varies by role) ● Employee Assistance Program ● Paid every two weeks ● Structured training, leadership development, and support toward technical certifications Schedule and location Full-time, on-site, day/evening/night shifts available across 9 openings. On-site at a partner hospital in the Richmond, VA (Midlothian) area — exact address provided once you apply.
No travel required for this role. About Instrumentum Instrumentum is a national sterile processing partner that helps hospitals and surgery centers run efficient, compliant, and safe instrument reprocessing operations, so our partners can focus on delivering exceptional care. Sterile processing is where patient safety starts.
Every tray that leaves the department is clean, complete, and ready for the surgeon, and the people who make that happen are the reason an operating room runs on time. We bring precision, consistency, and accountability to work that happens out of sight and matters in every case. We invest in the people who do this work.
You'll get structured training, leadership development, and support toward technical certifications, with clear standards and a team that treats your expertise as essential. In Richmond, you'd join at the start and help build it. If you take pride in getting it right every time, we'd like to hear from you.
