Intern - Economic Assistance Benefits Specialist (Fall/Spring)

• Economic Assistance Hiring Manager: Peyton Kollars Agency: Department of Social Services Location: Sioux Falls, SD Minimum Salary: $18.83 per hour *APPLICANT MUST BE A CURRENT PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME STUDENT (MINIMUM OF 6 CREDIT HOURS) IN UPCOMING SEMESTER OR IN THE IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING SEMESTER. Position Description: This internship will be assisting low income individuals and families with eligibility determinations for Economic Assistance programs, such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) or Medicaid. The intern will assist with communicating with the customers, verifying collateral information, entering the information into our computer system and determining eligibility based on our programs rules, regulations and policies. Contact with customers will include assessing their needs, clarifying household circumstances and making appropriate referrals to other state, federal and local resources who can support them. In addition, this internship will gain knowledge of other programs managed by Economic Assistance. Students with coursework or emphasis in the following areas will benefit from this internship: social sciences, behavioral science, or other human service fields, insurance, public administration, public health or health care administration.

Qualifications

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program. All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, South Dakota residents, and students of South Dakota institutions.
