[email protected] Department of Technology, AI and Society DTAS is one of the first departments of its kind in the country, and it is growing quickly. Launched in 2026 with a $5 million investment from New York State over three years, the department builds on long-standing strengths of Stony Brook's Department of Technology and Society and is housed in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The department is growing, with the recent appointment of an inaugural chair through a national search. DTAS will work closely with other CEAS departments, with colleges and schools across campus, and with Stony Brook's AI Innovation Institute (AI3). DTAS runs programs at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels, with new degree programs expected to be launched in 2027-28.
College of Engineering and Applied Sciences The Stony Brook University College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) has nine academic departments. It offers 13 undergraduate majors, 13 master's and 12 doctoral programs. Its faculty include 69 NSF CAREER award recipients, members of the National Academy of Engineering, and recipients of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology.
AI runs throughout the college. CEAS’s Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation, founded in 2018, grew into today's university-wide AI Innovation Institute. CEAS faculty also apply AI to problems ranging from biomolecular and drug design to smart energy systems. CEAS faculty and students collaborate across many research centers and institutes and with partners such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York State institutions, and industry.
New York State's Empire AI Initiative Empire AI, launched by Governor Kathy Hochul, advances AI research for the public good through an independent consortium whose members include SUNY, CUNY, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Flatiron Institute. In August 2026, the consortium brought Empire AI Beta online, a $40 million supercomputer and currently the most powerful academic AI research computer in the country.
