About the Role
The Lead Yardman is a hands-on leadership position responsible for supporting the Yard Foreman in coordinating and executing daily yard operations. This position helps organize the team's workload across will calls, transfers, receiving, outbound deliveries, and production needs while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
The Lead Yardman will help train and develop team members, ensure material is properly identified and validated, support inventory accuracy, and set the standard for safety, productivity, and teamwork.
Responsibilities
Partner with the Yard Foreman to plan daily priorities and coordinate the yard team's workload. Help manage workflow between will calls, transfers, incoming material, outbound deliveries, and production needs . Adjust priorities and manpower throughout the day based on operational needs. Serve as a working lead by assisting with loading, unloading, staging, processing, and movement of steel.
Drive safety by reinforcing PPE requirements, safe equipment operation, housekeeping, and company safety procedures. Ensure employees properly identify and validate material before receiving, processing, transferring, staging, or shipping. Train and coach employees on material identification and proper use of tape measures, gauge wheels, and micrometers .
Verify incoming and outgoing material for correct quantities, dimensions, specifications, and condition. Partner with the Yard Foreman and Purchasing to support inventory accuracy, cycle counts, receiving issues, and material discrepancies . Safely operate and train employees on the proper use of forklifts, bandsaws, chop saws, and shears .
Maintain an organized yard and ensure material is properly stored and identified. Communicate operational issues, delays, inventory discrepancies, equipment concerns, and safety issues to the Yard Foreman. Help train and develop new and existing yard employees. Serve as a point of contact for the yard team when the Yard Foreman is unavailable.
Lead by example and reinforce expectations for safety, accuracy, productivity, teamwork, and customer service .
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous steel, warehouse, manufacturing, or material-handling experience preferred. Forklift experience required. Experience operating a bandsaw, chop saw, and shear . Must be able to accurately read a tape measure . Ability to use or learn to use gauge wheels and micrometers . Strong understanding of inventory accuracy and warehouse/yard safety.
Ability to organize multiple priorities and provide clear direction to team members. Strong communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. Ability to perform physically demanding work and work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must demonstrate strong leadership, accountability, teamwork, and commitment to safety.
Leadership Expectations The Lead Yardman is expected to help the Yard Foreman maintain control of daily operations by planning the workload, directing priorities, developing employees, validating material accuracy, and driving safe execution . This individual should lead from the front and help ensure the yard consistently meets Endura Steel's expectations for Safety, Accuracy, Service, and Productivity .
