Geotechnical Superintendent

Dragoon, AZPosted Oct 9, 2026

Job description

Geotechnical Superintendent Johnson Camp Mine | Cochise County, Arizona Gunnison Copper is seeking an experienced Geotechnical Superintendent to lead the geotechnical and mine geology functions at our Johnson Camp Mine in southeastern Arizona. This is not a desk-only management position. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader who is comfortable in the field, capable of evaluating geotechnical conditions firsthand, and equally effective leading and developing a team.

The Superintendent will serve as the site's senior geotechnical resource while leading a department consisting of a Senior Geologist, three Ore-Control Geologists, a Sampling Technician and a geotechnical professional.

What You'll Do

You will lead and personally participate in the mine's geotechnical program, including: Pit-wall, highwall, catch-bench and heap-leach inspections. Slope-stability and ground-control risk assessment. Review and interpretation of prism, piezometer, inclinometer, InSAR, LiDAR and other monitoring data. Administration of geotechnical Trigger Action Response Plans.

Response to abnormal slope conditions and significant geotechnical events. Rockfall, highwall and catch-bench management. Evaluation of blast impacts and changing geological conditions. Coordination with external geotechnical consultants and the Design Engineer. Oversight of mine geology, ore-control and sampling activities.

Development and coaching of a multidisciplinary technical team. Clear communication of geotechnical risk and recommendations to mine leadership and Operations.

What We're Looking For

Bachelor's degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Mining or Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline. 8+ years of relevant experience, preferably in open-pit hard-rock mining. Strong knowledge of slope stability, rock mechanics and ground control. Experience with geotechnical monitoring and instrumentation. Strong field judgment and the ability to translate technical information into practical operational decisions.

Demonstrated leadership of engineers, geologists or other technical professionals. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Open-pit copper experience, heap-leach experience, TARP administration, Rocscience software proficiency, and EIT/PE credentials are highly desirable. This position is ideal for an experienced geotechnical professional who wants both technical ownership and leadership responsibility and enjoys working close to an operating mine rather than managing exclusively from an office.

Location: Johnson Camp Mine, Cochise County, Arizona Position: Full-Time, Salaried Exempt Gunnison Copper is an Equal Opportunity Employer. This position is not currently eligible for visa sponsorship
