Position Overview

The General Manager holds a central role in the success of the Madison Café’s business operations. As part of the café’s leadership, the General Manager works closely with the roastery staff, café staff, and barista and kitchen leads to achieve the café’s goals. Core Responsibilities C afe & People Leadership Lead and manage the café team, maintaining our unique and cohesive café culture.

Hire, onboard, and review team members against our values. Work a minimum of 2 shifts per week, cross-trained to fill all positions. Serve as subject matter expert in one or more fields — coffee, bakery, or prepared food — and provide quality control feedback in all areas. Exemplify the core values of Wonderstate Coffee.

Operations & Guest Experience Manage the schedule of all café employees in coordination with budgeting and labor reporting. Handle all café communication, including emails, phone calls, and various online platforms. Oversee inventory, ordering, and financial reporting against intentional par levels. Handle cash, disperse tips, and organize deposits.

Financial & Administrative Process payroll, approve time off, and champion staff benefit education. Manage café performance against budgeted sales, labor, and expense targets. Facilitate and manage relationships with vendors, with a focus on local and small producers where applicable. Community & Facilities Coordinate Community Engagement events and participate in local organizations as needed.

Oversee property management, including coordination of contractors and service providers. Maintain a meticulous environment that is clean, organized and customer friendly. Supervisor Responsibilities: Directly supervises the Madison Café team.

Required Skills

& Abilities Ability to communicate clearly and promptly with staff and customers. Customer service enthusiast. Common computer skills proficiency. Desire and ability to teach and lead others. Can give and receive feedback respectfully. Strong organization and time management skills. Impeccable follow-through. Ability to work the espresso machine and other brewing equipment.

Desire to continually be challenged and grow as a professional. Passion for ethically sourced, organic, high-quality coffee and food, sustainability practices, and supporting farmer cooperatives.

Education

& Experience 2+ years of café, restaurant, or food and beverage experience preferred. Prior people-management or team-lead experience preferred. Specialty coffee experience a plus. Safe Serve certification required (or willingness to obtain). Physical Requirements Ability to stand and move throughout the café for extended periods.

Ability to regularly bend, reach, and perform typical café tasks. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to safely operate café and food-service equipment as trained. Work Environment Based in Madison

• On site Flexible schedule based on café needs, including occasional weekends and special events. Regular, hands-on presence in daily café operations.
