Job description

Afloat NAMTS Coordinator / Inside Machinist Subject Matter Expert Purpose: Valkyrie Enterprises has an immediate need for an Afloat NAMTS Coordinator/Inside Machinist Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support the Navy Afloat Maintenance Training Strategy (NAMTS) program and Ship Intermediate Maintenance Activity (SIMA) in Virginia Beach, VA.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Navy maintenance leader with journeyman-level expertise in precision machining and shipboard component repair. This position combines deckplate leadership, hands-on machining instruction, and NAMTS program execution. The selected candidate will develop and evaluate Sailors working toward journeyman-level Inside Machinist proficiency, strengthening fleet self-sufficiency, maintenance quality, and readiness.

Job Description: Implement and execute the NAMTS Afloat program across assigned vessels, with particular emphasis on the Inside Machinist competency pathway and coordination with shipboard leadership and regional maintenance activities. Lead NAMTS Job Qualification Requirement (JQR) and USMAP indoctrination; partner with Department Heads, Division Officers, and senior enlisted leaders to establish candidate expectations, training plans, and qualification milestones.

Provide hands-on instruction and over-the-shoulder evaluation as Sailors machine, fabricate, modify, refurbish, inspect, and repair shipboard components in accordance with authorized technical work documents. Teach proper work planning, tool selection, machine setup, and sequencing for turning, milling, drilling, boring, threading, grinding, honing, and related conventional machining operations.

Mentor Sailors in the safe setup and operation of conventional lathes, milling machines, boring machines, grinders, presses, and other shop equipment; reinforce appropriate speeds, feeds, cutting tools, coolants, and material-handling practices. Provide technical guidance on CNC machining, including program preparation and editing, Fanuc controls, manual data input (MDI), CNC lathes, multi-axis milling centers, and computer-aided manufacturing methods as applicable to assigned equipment.

Instruct and evaluate precision inspection techniques using micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauge blocks, thread gauges, sine plates, comparators, and coordinate-measuring equipment; verify conformance to drawing and work-package tolerances. Support evaluation of additive manufacturing and 3D-printing approaches for shipboard repair components when authorized by applicable engineering and technical requirements.

Monitor candidate progression through JQR tasks, practical demonstrations, examinations, and oral boards; coordinate qualification activities and ensure Sailors demonstrate the required knowledge and skills. Maintain accurate, audit-ready NAMTS qualification records, including QPR and CeTARS entries as applicable; collect performance metrics, identify training gaps, and recommend corrective actions.

Ensure training and maintenance activities comply with NAVSEA requirements, safety standards, quality assurance procedures, technical directives, and approved FWPs and CWPs. Provide concise technical assessments, program updates, and risk briefings to Navy leadership, including O-6/GS-15 stakeholders; mentor Sailors and junior SMEs to improve qualification outcomes.
