Position Summary
The Night Foreman is responsible for overseeing all night field operations, including the night operations team and company wells in the DJ Basin. This individual reports to the Production Superintendent. The focus of the role is to maximize runtime and production while ensuring that all operations are executed safely and to SM standards.
The Night Foreman conducts business with the highest ethical standards and makes decisions that ensure the safety of all personnel associated with SM or while on facilities. This individual works closely with day operations staff to fix issues as they are found. Essential Roles and Responsibilities: In addition to the technical roles and responsibilities of a foreman of the specific discipline, the foreman is also responsible for the following: Split working hours between the field and the Operations Control Center (OCC), with the ability to work extended hours when required Operates and maintains all field equipment and is proficient in equipment inspection and repair Demonstrates proficient knowledge of downhole, wellheads, and facilities throughout the area of operations.
Is proficient with new well and facility equipment start-up procedures and able to assist and lead turn-ons Manages daily production across the area, recognizing opportunities to optimize production and maximize runtime during night operations Identifies and troubleshoots production challenges with wells, facilities, and equipment Ensure completions and production operations are scheduled and conducted to minimize delays, safety issues, technical issues, and risks As needed, conduct testing and verification of all safety devices to ensure equipment remains functional and compliant with company standards, policies, and requirements Actively participates in monthly safety meetings and leads meetings as needed Assists in the development of condition-based management programs Assists in the development and implementation of scheduled maintenance plans Effectively leads, trains, and mentors “Operator I, II, III, and IV” as well as Contract Operators, with technical expertise in all aspects of their roles Supervises and ensures performance is of the highest quality for all direct reports, and participates in their performance reviews and personnel development efforts Participates in multi-disciplinary team meetings, providing production operations discipline-specific input Develops good relationships with and effectively manages contractors and suppliers Confirms well site contractors are properly trained and approved with SCM Group Engages with landowners as needed to maintain strong relationships and communication Provides production operations discipline input into the budget process and collaborates with the Production Superintendent and management to develop budget estimates Understands cost metrics and analysis and makes recommendations that have a positive financial impact Maintains accurate records of all work performed by the night team, including handover notes Remains current on the latest proven technologies and methods for their operating discipline Other duties as assigned Role-Specific Technical Knowledge & Skills: The Night Foreman has an advanced command of industry terminology, production systems, and role-specific technical practices, and applies field leadership skills to identify and act on Operator development opportunities so that all team members meet their role-specific expectations.
The Night Foreman escalates any personnel performance deficiencies to the Production Superintendent. Process Control and Safety Systems: Demonstrate proficiency with process-control components, including pressure and level controllers and control valves, as well as safety-system devices such as PSHLs, LSHLs, PSVs, and SDVs.
Apply preventive-maintenance and troubleshooting practices. Ability to safely commission new production facilities. Professionally and effectively communicate production needs to all supporting departments. Understand and correctly perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Production Monitoring: Identify production equipment issues and promptly work with the Production Superintendent and/or supporting departments to remedy.
Inspection and Environmental Response: Routinely check in with team members to ensure they are conducting daily visual inspections of all surface equipment, identifying leaks, and escalating concerns as needed. Assist maintenance technicians with troubleshooting and repairs. Immediately report all spills and environmental concerns.
Equipment Reliability and Repair: Ensure all production devices are operational and maintained in good working order. Train all team members to repair or refurbish production equipment to allow for optimal operating efficiencies. Field Readiness: Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and tools assigned to the work truck.
Demonstrate a strong working knowledge of downhole components and equipment, including swab rigs, wireline, gas lift, and plungers. Computer/Software Applications: Proficient level of skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office. Proficient knowledge of SCADA (Cygnet), Novara, Power BI, and True Context.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate or bachelor’s degree in related field preferred. Typical Experience: Minimum 8+ years of oil and gas industry experience.
