East Otero School District R-1 La Junta, Colorado J O B D E S C R I P T I O N Position Title : Certified Special Education Teacher Reports To: Building Principal SUMMARY : The Special Education Instructor creates a positive learning environment to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students.
In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Special Education Instructor must work closely with the other staff, the administration, and other programs of East Otero School District R-1.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties and responsibilities
Facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students Prepare student individual educational plans, including development of instructional programs in consultation with parents and IEP team members Design instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum Act as coordinator of IEP implementation with general education staff.
Monitor student progress, participles in review and revision of IEP, as appropriate Assist other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation and evaluation of student progress Articulate curriculum between and among student levels Administers medication according to policy and regulations Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions to the Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan Assists with behavior management programs and techniques Maintain appropriate student data and other records and submit reports required Establish a positive learning environment and respond to the individual needs of students.
Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines Obtain advance approval of the Principal for all activities and expenditures Communicate and work effectively with members of the school district and community Manage classroom organization React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned Support the value of an education Support the philosophy and mission of East Otero School District R-1 Communicate and work with BOCES Special Education Director Other duties as assigned by the Principal, or other Administrative Staff SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : Supervises special education aides.

EDUCATION
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college/university, Colorado Teaching License/Certificate with necessary endorsement as required by the Colorado Department of Education.Individual must possess a desire to continue career improvement. LANGUAGE SKILLS : Language skills required for this job may include: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or visitors to the district. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Mathematical skills required at all levels include: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. REASONING ABILITY : Reasoning ability may include: Ability to solve practical problems and involving several variables in various situations.. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or diagram form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES : Other skills and abilities essential and required for this job may include: Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND EVALUATION : Terms of employment and evaluation for this job will include: A ten-month school year contract, for either full-time or part-time employment, based on job need. Salary and fringe benefits to be determined by the Board of Education as indicated on the adopted Teacher Salary Schedule.
