The circulator helps maintain patient safety, verifies key procedure details, and coordinates the surgical team and equipment in the operating room. The OR RN is responsible for coordinating surgical procedures from preoperative assessment through postoperative evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

Assess the patient’s condition and monitor level of consciousness and vital signs as appropriate to the procedure and your scope of practice. Prepare the patient for surgery, including assisting with gowning, positioning, and operative site preparation according to the care plan and facility policy. Verify the patient, procedure, and operative site with the surgical team and participate in the required pre-procedure time-out.

Obtain or witness consent documentation as assigned and in accordance with facility policy and applicable requirements. Check and help maintain the supplies and equipment needed for the procedure. Ensure aseptic technique is followed throughout the procedure, monitor the surgical team for compliance, and maintain sterility of instruments, supplies, and the operating room Coordinate the surgical count process with the scrub person and document counts according to policy.

Document relevant assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the medical record. The circulator nurse assists anesthesia personnel with intubation/extubating, fluid management, blood product administration, and patient thermoregulation Assist with operating room turnover, including appropriate disposal of used supplies and sharps.

Communicate with the surgical team to support safe, coordinated care throughout the procedure. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The circulator nurse works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and other team members. Maintain professional competency through continuing education and adhere to hospital policies and performance improvement programs Knowledge of nursing care methods and procedures Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team Effective verbal and written communication and problem-solving skills EKG knowledge as required for the unit and applicable credential requirements English language proficiency for reading, speaking, and writing Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate Windows-based programs Ability to assess patients, evaluate interventions, and revise the plan of care based on patient outcomes Why Join Advent.

Qualifications

Associate degree in Nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. At least one year of experience in an Operating Room setting. Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) Registered Nurse (RN) license required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Additional licenses or certifications may be required based on the unit or state.
