$55k to $63k

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department - Glennan BuildingPosted Oct 16, 2026

Job description

A postdoctoral scholar position is available in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). The successful candidate will conduct research in computational fluid dynamics (CFD), fluid-structure interaction (FSI), and bio-inspired fluid mechanics, with potential applications in insect flight, aquatic locomotion, and biological sensing.

The position involves developing high-fidelity numerical simulations, analyzing complex flow phenomena, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary research team. Candidates with a strong background in CFD, numerical methods, and scientific computing are encouraged to apply. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewing for an additional year.

Responsibilities

  1. Conduct computational research in fluid dynamics, fluid -structure interaction, and bio-inspired fluid mechanics, including the development, implementation, and validation of high-fidelity numerical simulations.
  2. Develop and apply computational models, numerical algorithms, and data analysis techniques to investigate complex fluid flow phenomena. Perform simulations using high-performance computing (HPC) resources and analyze research results.
  3. Collaborate with faculty members, graduate students, and external research partners on interdisciplinary research projects. Participate in regular research meetings, provide technical guidance to students, and contribute to collaborative research activities.
  4. Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, present research findings at conferences, contribute to research proposals and technical reports, and perform other research-related duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator. **In compliance with the City of Cleveland’s Pay Transparency Ordinance (effective October 27, 2025), the annual starting base salary range for this position is $55,000 - $63,480. CWRU considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer. Postdocs receive individual and family healthcare benefits, life insurance, and employee assistance.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated research experience in CFD and FSI.
  • Experience with numerical simulations, scientific programming (e.g., FORTRAN and C++), and computational data analysis.
  • Experience using high-performance computing (HPC) systems for scientific simulations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Review of applications will begin on November 1 , 2026 , and will continue until the position is filled. Interested candidates should submit the following materials:

  • A cover letter describing their research interests and relevant qualifications;
  • A current curriculum vitae;
  • Academic transcripts;
  • At least one current letter of recommendation; and
  • A writing sample (e.g., a published or submitted journal article, conference paper, or dissertation chapter). Application materials should be submitted electronically to through Interfolio. Selected candidates will be invited for an online interview via Zoom. Case Western Reserve University is an equal opportunity employer.
