Role Summary
Tru. Grid is seeking an experienced Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support utility-scale solar PV, battery energy storage system (BESS), and hybrid renewable energy projects throughout the project lifecycle. The Electrical SME serves as a technical resource supporting project development, estimating, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning efforts.
This role is responsible for conceptual and preliminary electrical engineering, technical review of external engineering deliverables, power systems analysis, equipment evaluations, and technical support during project execution. The ideal candidate possesses strong utility-scale solar PV, BESS, medium-voltage, and high-voltage power systems experience and is comfortable working in a fast-paced EPC environment.
This position requires a hands-on approach to engineering, including development of conceptual engineering deliverables, review of power system studies, coordination with external Engineers of Record (EORs), and support of procurement and construction activities. The Electrical SME works closely with project engineering, preconstruction, procurement, construction, development, and external engineering partners to help deliver safe, reliable, constructable, and cost-effective projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES: Conceptual & Preliminary Engineering Develop conceptual and preliminary electrical engineering deliverables for utility-scale solar PV, BESS, and hybrid renewable energy projects. Prepare and review single-line diagrams (SLDs), collection system layouts, BESS layouts, substation arrangements, and conceptual electrical equipment layouts.
Support development of Basis of Design documents and project technical assumptions. Prepare and review Bills of Material (BOMs) and equipment specifications. Support equipment selection including inverters, PCS, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and balance-of-system equipment. Support estimating and proposal development with technical assumptions, conceptual designs, and engineering evaluations.
Develop and review PV energy modeling using PVsyst. Power Systems Engineering Perform or review load flow, short circuit, protection and coordination, arc flash, grounding, and cable ampacity studies. Review utility requirements, interconnection studies, and utility design criteria. Evaluate electrical system configurations for constructability, reliability, maintainability, and cost optimization.
Support review of medium-voltage, high-voltage, substation, and transmission system designs. Engineering Review & Consultant Coordination Review electrical engineering deliverables prepared by external Engineers of Record (EORs). Verify compliance with project requirements, Basis of Design documents, utility requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
Identify design risks, constructability concerns, and scope gaps. Coordinate technical comments between Tru. Grid project teams and engineering consultants. Track resolution of engineering comments through final design issuance. Review engineering schedules, deliverables, and technical scope assumptions. Procurement & Vendor Support Review vendor technical proposals and equipment datasheets.
Support technical bid evaluations and procurement decision-making. Assist procurement teams with technical clarifications and equipment evaluations. Evaluate equipment substitutions and deviations. Support procurement of transformers, switchgear, BESS equipment, protection systems, and major electrical equipment. Assist with development of technical specifications and procurement packages.
Construction & Commissioning Support Provide technical support during construction and commissioning. Support resolution of RFIs, design clarifications, field issues, and equipment-related concerns. Coordinate with engineering consultants to address construction-phase issues. Participate in project closeout and lessons-learned activities.
General Responsibilities Collaborate effectively with engineering, procurement, construction, and project management teams. Maintain awareness of emerging renewable energy technologies and industry best practices. Maintain regular attendance in accordance with company policy. Travel up to 20% as required. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
PE and or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) license preferred. Minimum 7 years of utility-scale renewable energy experience including solar PV and/or battery energy storage systems with experience in medium-voltage and high-voltage power systems. Minimum of 5 years of hands-on AutoCAD drafting experience; PVcase and or PVFARM experience is a plus.
Minimum of 5 years of hand-on PVsyst modeling experience; other modeling software including storage dispatch is a plus. Familiarity of Project Management Tools such as PROCORE. Experience with P&C design and coordination, SCADA and relay coordination, arc flash analysis, grounding, load flow, short circuit, cable ampacity and sizing and other electrical design considerations.
Proficiency in LV and MV design including inverter, PCS, transformer and major equipment selection, DC collection, auxiliary design and BOS (solar PV and BESS) design. Experience with ETAP, SKM, CYME and other electrical and power software. Experience reviewing EPC contracts, ESAs, MSAs, and other commercial contracts.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present technical recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and consistently achieve deadlines. Fosters a culture of trust and transparency both internally and externally by treating all people, firms and Clients with value and respect through collaboration and teamwork.
Remains energized, enthusiastic, and flexible in the face of complex challenges and uncertainty. Understand the importance of prioritizing the client. Ability to work effectively in fast-moving and manage multiple projects simultaneously while collaborating cross functionally with other Tru. Grid departments. Track record of consistently maintaining deadlines and company objectives.
In depth knowledge of NEC, UL, IEEE, NFPA, etc. Highly motivated self-starter mindset with a priority towards health and safety. Must have a valid driver’s license. Travel up to 20% as needed **Tru.
