School Counselor Lewiston Public Schools Job Title School Counselor Department Student Support Reports To Building Principal Approved By J. Langlais, Superintendent Effective Date 10/2/2026 Status Full-time, salaried Salary Range $45,518.26 � $85,857.57 annually Position Summary The School Counselor is a member of the school's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) team within the Response to Intervention (RTI) framework.
The counselor supports a broad range of students' social-emotional needs so they are best positioned for academic success, working with students, families, teachers, and community partners. Essential Requirement: Availability The employee must be available and able to work five (5) days per week, Monday through Friday, according to the Lewiston Public Schools schedule.
This is an essential function of the position, not a preference. Students in crisis and the staff who support them depend on a counselor being available every school day. Regular, predictable attendance is therefore required, along with RTI meetings, family meetings, and scheduled professional development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Other duties may be assigned. Schoolwide SEL and data Analyze student data to identify and support schoolwide social-emotional learning needs. Collaborate with and support general education teachers in delivering the core Tier 1 SEL curriculum. Attend RTI meetings and help identify the level of support each student needs.
Intervention and student support Implement and facilitate research-informed interventions in large-group, small-group, and individual settings. Identify and develop accommodations and resources for students and teachers, and help draft and carry out individual behavior plans. Engage in restorative work with students, families, and classrooms.
Respond to, assess, and make recommendations for students in crisis, following district protocols. Families and community Engage families in the RTI process and in problem solving. Prepare and follow up on referrals to outside agencies. Staff support and professional practice Develop and facilitate professional development for staff.
Keep student information confidential under FERPA and professional ethics, and fulfill mandated reporting obligations under Maine law. Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises students. No supervisory responsibility for staff.
Qualifications

Education
Master's degree in school counseling, counseling, or social work Certificates, licenses, and registrations One of the following: Maine Department of Education school counselor certification Valid Maine teaching certificate, or; A Maine clinical license: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Master Social Worker � Conditional Clinical (LMSW-cc), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), or Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor � Conditional (LCPC-c) Also required: Completed criminal history record check (fingerprinting), as required by Maine law Available and able to work 5 days per week per the Lewiston Public Schools schedule Language skills Read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
Write reports, correspondence, and procedures. Present information effectively and respond to questions from students, families, staff, community partners, and the public. Mathematical and data skills Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Analyze student data, including basic statistics, to identify needs and measure the impact of interventions.
Reasoning ability Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret a wide variety of technical instructions and handle several abstract and concrete variables at once. Other skills and abilities Apply current research and theory to counseling and SEL programs. Plan and carry out goals that reflect therapeutic best practice, school objectives, and students' needs and abilities.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with students, colleagues, parents, and the community. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Perform duties in line with all district requirements and School Committee policies.
Compensation
and Benefits The salary range for this position is $45,518.26 to $85,857.57 annually, with placement on the salary schedule based on education and experience. Work takes place mainly in a counseling office, classrooms, and meeting rooms. The noise level is usually quiet. The counselor is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students and regularly works with students in crisis and families under stress.
