Solicitor - Intellectual Property
Job description
Due to recent growth, we are seeking a Solicitor with minimum five years post-qualification experience in Intellectual Property law, to join the team. BRM offer comprehensive legal services to businesses nationally. As one of the leading law firms in the Yorkshire and Derbyshire region, we focus on providing bespoke legal advice, working closely together to deliver a professional and personalised service our clients can rely on.
Our teams have gained a nationwide reputation for their efficiency and commercial approach. Our solicitors offer deep legal knowledge through the lens of real-world business insight. A clear focus on each client’s unique circumstances and needs supports informed decision-making at every stage of their legal matter. This is a brilliant opportunity for someone who enjoys handling a broad range of intellectual property (IP) disputes, including trademarks, passing off, copyright and design matters.
Joining an existing team of Director and Solicitor, you’ll work closely with the Corporate and Commercial, and Dispute Resolution teams. Due to recent growth, you’ll have excellent prospects to develop professional networks and take an active role in your own business development and profile-raising activities. You’ll have a genuine platform to build visibility both within the firm and across the wider IP community.
Your duties and responsibilities will include: IP protection and strategy: Advising clients on the best strategies to protect their intellectual assets, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and design rights. This involves identifying all IP assets and developing an overall strategy aligned with the client’s business goals Registration and filing: Preparing, drafting, and filing applications for patents, trademarks, and design rights with relevant authorities, such as the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) or the European Patent Office (EPO) Contracts and licensing: Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial agreements related to IP, such as licensing agreements, assignment (transfer of ownership) agreements, collaboration agreements, and non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).
This allows clients to monetize their IP assets Enforcement and litigation: Monitoring for potential infringements of clients’ IP rights and taking legal action, if necessary. This includes issuing cease-and-desist letters, negotiating settlements, and representing clients in court proceedings or alternative dispute resolutions (arbitration or mediation).
IP solicitors also defend clients accused of infringing on others’ rights Research and due diligence: Conducting extensive legal research on IP laws and prior art to ensure originality and avoid infringement claims. This is often crucial during business transactions like mergers and acquisitions to assess the value and risks associated with IP assets.
Requirement: More than five years post-qualification experience in Intellectual Property law. We’re looking for someone who communicates well, has excellent attention to detail and enjoys finding practical solutions for busy clients. If you’re entrepreneurial, enjoy taking ownership and like being part of a friendly culture where ideas are encouraged, this opportunity may be great for you.
Personal: Excellent communications skills Team-oriented, reliable and supportive of others Able to manage pressure and meet tight deadlines Logical problem solver with a consistent initiative driven approach Proactive and eager to learn new skills Flexible and adaptable to support the wider business as needed. Salary negotiable 23 days holiday, plus bank holidays and discretionary company days at Christmas Free Wills and generous discounted conveyancing Healthcare cash plan Death in service life cover Company pension scheme Contribution to parking costs Regular social events.
