IMMI is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual to fill the role of Instrumentation Technician. The Instrumentation Technician supports IMMI’s testing operations by managing, calibrating, maintaining, repairing, and documenting anthropomorphic test devices (ATDs), electronic instrumentation, and photographic equipment to ensure accuracy, reliability, and compliance with the CAPE Quality Management System.
The role works closely with the CAPE Director of Operations to review schedules, plan workloads, and communicate equipment availability, while also coordinating with the Engineering Manager and collaborating laterally with Fabrication and Test Technicians to effectively support testing operations for internal and external customers.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities/ Essential Functions: Perform all tasks related to electronic instrumentation and control systems, ensuring proper operation, calibration, repair, and documentation. This includes: Utilization, calibration, maintenance, and repair of instrumentation (rotary/linear pots, load cells, accelerometers, strain gauges, string pots).
Electrical design and development (circuitry, programming, system integration). Software programming and data analysis (DIAdem, C+, Visual Basic, RMC Tools, Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Solid. Works). Connector and cable work (Fischer, LEMO, Amphenol; cable/wire repair; panel building/repair). Data acquisition and processing (Messring MBUS, DTS, PLC, data conversion, filtering).
Calibration and maintenance of ATDs (test dummies), biomechanical systems, transducers, and data acquisition systems. Photographic instrumentation (high-speed cameras, lighting systems, video/photometric calibration). Accessory systems (electronic brake abort, LED lighting, communication radios, overhead lighting). Instrumentation lab activities (soldering, DMM, oscilloscope, power supply, signal generator).
Manage and document all calibration activities (internal and external), ensuring compliance with required tolerances. Develop, manage, and maintain CAPE instrumentation management systems, databases, and software files. Provide technical expertise in electrical engineering, instrumentation design, software development, and system troubleshooting.
Conduct tests at CAPE test centers, ensuring customers receive accurate data, photographs, and video documentation. Review and verify calibration certificates for accuracy and compliance. Provide training and technical support to CAPE staff on instrumentation, ATDs, and testing processes. Monitor and communicate issues affecting safety, equipment functionality, data quality, or project timelines.
Support continuous improvement by staying current with technology and industry testing standards. Maintain confidentiality of customer information and ensure all records and communications are professional. Promote collaboration and a positive, solutions-focused environment with CAPE personnel and customers. Perform housekeeping and 5S functions to maintain a safe, organized workspace.
Represent IMMI professionally with customers, industry partners, and government entities. Adhere to IMMI/CAPE safety, quality, conduct, and policy requirements, including authority limitations. Skills & Qualifications: Required: Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Computer Technology, or equivalent military/industrial experience.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, data analysis and collection software, motion analysis software, and programming for PLCs, motion controllers, data processing scripts, and user interfaces. Hands-on experience with electronics and instrumentation, including DMMs, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, soldering, and assembly/repair of cables and connectors.
Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and auditory) to collaborate across teams, support customers, and meet reporting requirements. Physically able to perform tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs., climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motions.
Must maintain an IMMI forklift license and a valid driver’s license, with the ability to travel (including by air) and drive long distances as required. Flexibility to provide after-hours and weekend support to meet customer testing and project deadlines. Required Tools: Electronics & Calibration: Digital Multimeter (DMM), oscilloscope, waveform/signal generator, soldering tools, cable/connector assembly tools (Fischer, LEMO, Amphenol).
Data Acquisition & Control: PLCs, motion controllers, Messring MBUS, DTS systems, data acquisition systems, and data processing scripts. Software & Programming: Microsoft Office, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, DIAdem, Solid. Works, Visual Basic, C+. Instrumentation & Testing: ATD calibration tools, strain gauges, load cells, accelerometers, photometric calibration equipment, high-speed cameras, and lighting systems.
Electrical & Design: Electrical schematics, blueprints, and panel-building equipment. General Lab & Safety: Standard hand tools, test benches, forklift (IMMI license), and PPE. Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to visually inspect and interpret designs on screen and in print.
Use of functional Core Tools Working Conditions/Environment: Standard office environment with occasional visits to automotive test facilities or manufacturing sites. Occasional travel may be required to support design or supplier reviews. Remote work options may be available depending on project requirements and company policy.
When in the warehouse, this position requires working with dirt/dust and noise. A variety of proper PPE is required to provide a safe working environment. Requires working and interacting with others in person and through phone, electronic, and written correspondence, as well as listening effectively, communicating, maintaining attention to detail, and performing focused work.
This work is deadline-oriented, requires multitasking, fluctuating work schedules, and flexibility within the workday. Frequent use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary. Requires the ability for close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
