Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Environmental and Resource Economics

Stony Brook UniversityPosted Oct 16, 2026

Job description

The School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Sustainability Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of environmental and resource economics. SoMAS’s mission is to advance knowledge and solve critical global and regional problems through the study of human and natural systems. Coastal and marine resources, land use, food systems, and the climate are changing rapidly, and sound management depends on understanding how people, markets, and policies respond to and shape those changes.

We seek an economist whose research addresses these questions for living resources (e.g., fisheries, ecosystems and ecosystem services, and food systems), non-living resources (e.g., carbon, energy, water, and ocean and coastal space), or both. Relevant areas include spatially explicit economic analysis of environmental systems, marine spatial planning, land-use transitions, externality pricing, benefit-cost analysis, and the economics of ocean- and land-based climate mitigation.

Theoretical, empirical, and quantitative approaches are all welcome. The position offers an economist an unusual opportunity to work alongside oceanographers, atmospheric scientists, ecologists, and sustainability scholars to connect ecosystem dynamics, human behavior, and markets, and to translate that work into effective and socially beneficial policy.

Description of Duties: The successful candidate will establish and sustain an independent, externally funded research program supported by federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NOAA, USDA), state programs, foundations, or nongovernmental organizations. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to teaching and will teach classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as mentor students.

The candidate will commit to departmental and university service. Special Notes: This is a tenure-track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Campus Description: Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore.

Our 1,100-acre campus is home to 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff. SBU is a comprehensive research-intensive university and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), which includes 34 public universities among its 62 members. SBU consists of 12 schools and colleges and a teaching hospital that provides state-of-the-art healthcare in the Long Island region.

SBU also manages and performs joint research with Brookhaven National Laboratory, the only Department of Energy Laboratory in the Northeast, and shares doctoral programs with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a world-renowned molecular biology institute. SBU serves as the anchor of the New York Climate Exchange, located on Governors Island close to Manhattan.

Home to the Emerson String Quartet, the Pollock-Krasner House in East Hampton, New York, the Humanities Institute, and the Southampton Arts Program, and with endeavors that extend to the Turkana Basin Institute in Kenya and the Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar, SBU sustains an international reputation that cuts across the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Sustainability Sciences: The School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Sustainability Sciences (SoMAS) is the State University of New York’s center for marine and atmospheric research, education, and public service. Its three divisions (Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Sciences, and Sustainability Studies) serve approximately 800 graduate and undergraduate students, and its faculty are internationally known for research in atmospheric sciences, all the major disciplines of oceanography (biological, chemical, geological, and physical), and sustainability studies.

SoMAS has a strong record of partnership with agencies such as NOAA and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and with regional programs such as the Peconic Estuary Partnership. It also provides scientific leadership for the New York Climate Exchange on Governors Island, which aims to be a leading hub for climate finance, policy guidance, and innovation in scaling investment in climate action.

Excellent opportunities for collaboration exist within SoMAS and across Stony Brook, including with the Department of Economics, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
