Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patient Care & Customer Service Evaluate patients' lifestyle and visual needs to recommend personalized eyewear solutions. Assist patients with frame and lens selection based on prescription requirements, lifestyle, comfort, and style preferences. Educate patients on products, lens technologies, coatings, warranties, and services offered by the optical department.
Address patient questions and concerns in a professional, knowledgeable, and compassionate manner. Provide outstanding customer service and ensure a positive experience for every patient. Complete eyewear recheck documentation and evaluate patient concerns regarding eyewear performance or fit. Refer situations outside the scope of expertise to the appropriate provider or department.
Optical Services & Technical Responsibilities Obtain accurate measurements for eyewear fabrication and fitting. Verify the accuracy of all eyewear prior to dispensing. Adjust, repair, clean, and troubleshoot eyewear to ensure optimal fit, comfort, and function. Perform eyewear dispensing and patient education at delivery.
Maintain basic knowledge of contact lenses for ordering, processing, and patient support. Provide contact lens insertion and removal training for new wearers as needed. Operations & Administrative Responsibilities Process orders for eyewear and optical merchandise accurately and efficiently. Maintain knowledge of vision plans, insurance benefits, and optical coverage requirements.
Utilize optical software applications, EMR systems, ECW, and other department technology effectively. Post optical charges accurately and assist with daily balancing procedures. Maintain organized records and documentation in accordance with department standards and HIPAA requirements. Perform miscellaneous optical and clerical duties as assigned.
Merchandising & Department Support Assist with marketing initiatives and promotion of optical products and services. Maintain agreed-upon board space and product displays for frame vendors. Merchandise optical products to enhance the patient experience and support department performance goals. Maintain a clean, organized, attractive, and welcoming optical environment throughout the workday.
Participate in department meetings and contribute ideas for improvements in patient care, efficiency, and department success. Support departmental and organizational performance standards and goals. Teamwork & Professionalism Foster positive working relationships with providers, coworkers, and other departments. Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to excellent patient care.
Support team members and contribute to a positive workplace culture. Perform other duties as assigned. Reporting Relationships The Optician reports directly to the Optical Manager and works closely with providers, clinic staff, and fellow optical team members to ensure an exceptional patient experience.
Qualifications
Required High School Diploma or equivalent. Ability to obtain ABO Certification within one year of hire. Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn optical and electronic medical record software.
Preferred ABO Certification. One to two years of optical experience. Experience working with vision insurance plans and optical products. Previous experience in a healthcare, optical, or customer service environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to educate patients and communicate information clearly. Knowledge of HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards. Demonstrated ability to use office equipment, computers, and Microsoft Office applications. Ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining exceptional service. Work Environment Work is generally performed in a clinical and retail optical setting.
Travel to other clinic locations is required for coverage. Work schedules are based on clinic needs. This position requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods and may involve occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs.
