Position Overview

Three Notch Group is seeking a Construction Materials Testing (CMT) Technician II to join our growing team in Knoxville, Tennessee. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the quality and compliance of commercial, industrial, institutional, roadway, and infrastructure construction projects through field observations, materials testing, inspections, and documentation.

Working independently and alongside engineers, project managers, contractors, and clients, the CMT Technician II will monitor contractor progress, evaluate conformance with project requirements, and perform quality-control and contract-administration activities. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, technically proficient, and committed to delivering high-quality service in active construction environments.

Primary Responsibilities Perform field observations, testing, and inspections on commercial, industrial, institutional, roadway, and infrastructure construction projects throughout the service area. Read and interpret construction plans, geotechnical reports, project specifications, and applicable building codes. Monitor contractor activities and document conformance with project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, and applicable standards.

Perform construction materials testing and special inspections during site grading and earthwork, structural fill placement and compaction, foundation bearing evaluations, cast-in-place concrete placement, reinforcing steel installation, and asphalt placement. Collect field samples and perform testing in accordance with ASTM, ACI, ICC, DOT, and project-specific requirements.

Operate nuclear density gauges in accordance with company procedures, safety protocols, and applicable certification requirements. Use concrete testing equipment to perform slump, air content, temperature, and unit weight testing and to fabricate concrete cylinders in accordance with ASTM and ACI standards. Use other field testing equipment and devices in accordance with company procedures and applicable standards.

Prepare clear, accurate, and timely field reports, daily observation reports, test summaries, and inspection documentation using company software and reporting systems. Communicate effectively with contractors, project managers, engineers, and clients regarding construction progress, testing and inspection results, non-compliant conditions, field observations, and recommendations.

Maintain testing equipment, company vehicles, and field supplies in safe and proper working condition. Follow company safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment on active construction sites. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed throughout the service area. What Success Looks Like Success in this role means consistently delivering accurate testing, inspections, observations, and documentation that help ensure construction work conforms to project plans, specifications, geotechnical recommendations, applicable codes, and industry standards.

The CMT Technician II will communicate findings clearly, identify and document non-compliant conditions, and provide dependable field support to contractors, engineers, project managers, and clients. The successful candidate will prioritize safety, maintain required certifications, care for company equipment and vehicles, and complete timely, professional reports.

They will demonstrate accountability, sound technical judgment, organization, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a project team.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Two to five years of construction, construction inspection, or construction materials testing experience. Industry certifications such as ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, NICET, ICC, or DOT certifications. Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a project team. Familiarity with construction inspection and field testing procedures. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. Ability to safely lift and carry materials and testing equipment in accordance with company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including routinely lifting up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with team assistance or mechanical aids.

Ability to move and handle construction materials, testing equipment, concrete samples, and soil samples using proper lifting techniques and approved assistance devices when necessary. Ability to perform frequent bending, hammering, lifting, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, climbing, balancing, and other repetitive physical movements.

Ability to stand for extended periods while performing field observations and testing activities. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel to project sites as needed.
