Tribal Officer-Ranger

Reno, NV, USFull-timePosted Oct 8, 2026

Job description

Who We Are

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute),Newe (Western Shoshone), andWasheshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival.

Each group's name means "The People" in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.

Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.

What You'll Do

As a Tribal Officer-Ranger, you help safeguard community safety while protecting the Tribe's rural lands, natural resources, and cultural sites across Reno and Hungry Valley. This mid-level, onsite role blends proactive enforcement with investigative work in remote terrain.

Key responsibilities include

patrol by 4x4, ATV, and on foot; enforcing RSIC environmental/solid waste ordinances and RCRA; protecting archaeological resources and investigating ARPA violations; coordinating cases with Tribal patrol and investigations; supporting wildland fire investigations and special missions (search and rescue, EMS support); operating an FAA-compliant unmanned aerial system (drone); traffic enforcement and apprehension; and completing daily activity reporting.

Required qualifications:

  • Nevada State Category 1 P.O.S.T. certification at hire; age 21+
  • 1+ year law enforcement experience or relevant accredited coursework
  • Ability to obtain BIA SLEC within one year
  • Strong written/oral communication; pass background, medical, and physical agility testing; meet physical/vision/hearing standards
  • Willingness to work overtime and shift rotations

Apply to bring integrity, safety, and problem-solving to this essential field role.

A Typical Shift

Your Thursday-Monday shift (typically 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., with fluctuations) starts with a briefing, equipment check, and route planning based on current activity in Hungry Valley. You spend much of the day outdoors-moving between wide-open stretches of undeveloped land, access roads, and sensitive areas-balancing visibility with quiet observation.

Between contacts with visitors and coordinated updates with partner agencies, you document what you see, follow up on leads, and keep records current for reporting. Some days stay steady and routine; others pivot quickly when weather, fire conditions, or urgent calls require you to adjust plans and stay focused through the end of shift.

Total Rewards

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage
  • 401(k)
  • Life Insurance
  • Paid Time Off

Please Note: Hiring preference is provided to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Reno-Sparks Indian Colony requires any designated candidate to complete a pre-employment criminal background check, drug screen, and confirmation of professional references.
