YMCA Camp Chandler
- SWAT Job Description SWAT (servants working all together) SWAT members serve alongside cabin counselors to support the daily care, safety, and engagement of campers throughout their camp experience. Working under the supervision of the assigned Cabin Counselor and reporting directly to the Camp Director, the SWAT member helps ensure that every camper feels welcomed, valued, and cared for. SWAT is designed for 16-year-old staff who are ready to serve campers and grow as leaders, working closely alongside counselors while taking on slightly less responsibility as they develop toward future counselor roles. Primary Responsibilities Assist the Cabin Counselor in supervising and caring for campers throughout the day and, if applicable, overnight hours. Build genuine, caring relationships with campers, taking time to know them and make them feel seen and included. Lead campers with kindness, patience, and consistency, modeling the behavior and character Camp Chandler hopes to instill. Support and participate in cabin activities, games, and devotions alongside the Cabin Counselor. Help address camper conflict, homesickness, and emotional needs with compassion, always involving the Cabin Counselor as needed. Assist in maintaining camper safety and accountability during activities, transitions, meals, and free time. Communicate openly and respectfully with the Cabin Counselor, fellow SWAT members, and camp staff. Report any camper concerns — physical, emotional, or behavioral — to the Cabin Counselor promptly. Encourage campers to try new things, step outside their comfort zone, and support one another as a cabin family. Serve under the direction and supervision of the Cabin Counselor, following their lead on camper care and cabin management. Uphold all YMCA and Camp Chandler policies and procedures related to camper safety, supervision, and staff conduct. Serve as a positive role model, reflecting Camp Chandler's values of caring, honesty, respect, faith, and responsibility in words and actions. Complete additional camper-care and program responsibilities as assigned by the Cabin Counselor or Camp Director. Expectations SWAT members should be dependable, teachable, and genuinely invested in the well-being of every camper they serve alongside. This individual should understand that leading campers well starts with caring for them well — showing up with kindness, humility, and a servant's heart, even on the hardest days. As a 16-year-old staff member, the SWAT member is still growing as a leader and is expected to work under the guidance of their Cabin Counselor, asking questions and seeking support when needed rather than handling situations alone. This role is an opportunity to serve campers well while building the skills and maturity needed for future counselor roles at Camp Chandler. Above all, the SWAT member should embody the heart of the program's name — serving campers, counselors, and fellow staff with humility, teamwork, and care.
