Job Title: Registered Nurse – Anaesthetic and Recovery Department: General Theatre Reports to: Theatre Unit Manager Position Type: Full-Time Position Summary: The Registered Nurse – Anaesthetic and Recovery is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in both the anaesthetic and post-anaesthetic recovery phases.

This role requires advanced clinical skills and the ability to work collaboratively with anaesthetists, surgeons, and other perioperative staff to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the surgical experience.

Key Responsibilities

Anaesthetic Nursing Duties: Prepare and check anaesthetic equipment and emergency resuscitation equipment. Assist the anaesthetist during induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia. Monitor the patient’s vital signs and airway during procedures. Maintain accurate documentation and assist in managing the anaesthetic record.

Ensure patient safety and comfort prior to, during, and after the administration of anaesthesia. Provide emotional support and education to patients undergoing surgery. Recovery Room Nursing Duties: Provide immediate post-operative care and monitoring in the Recovery Room Assess and manage patients' airway, pain, nausea, and overall condition post-surgery.

Respond to post-operative complications and initiate emergency protocols when necessary. Communicate effectively with the surgical team, anaesthetist, and ward staff. Provide discharge education to patients and/or family members if applicable. Skills and Qualifications: Essential: Current Registration with SANC Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience in perioperative nursing, including anaesthetics and/or recovery.

BLS/ALS certification (Basic/Advanced Life Support). Sound knowledge of anaesthetic and emergency procedures. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Desirable: Postgraduate qualification in Perioperative Nursing or Anaesthetics/Recovery Nursing. Experience with a wide range of surgical specialties.

Familiarity with electronic medical records systems. Work Conditions: Fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Rotating shifts including early, late, and on-call as required.
