Lead Structured Cabling Technician - Salt Lake City, UT
Job description
Summit Technology is dedicated to providing cutting edge IT solutions aimed at providing a great end user experience. We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business. Location State: Utah Location City: Salt Lake City About Summit Technology Summit Technology is a Salt Lake City company that designs, builds and manages the infrastructure modern organizations run on.
Our GRID Structured Cabling team installs the copper, fiber and physical security systems underneath it all, for apartment communities, commercial buildings, hotels and enterprise campuses across the Intermountain West and beyond. We are small on purpose. We hire remarkable people, give them real ownership and stay out of their way.
Our values are short: Curious, Remarkable, Accountable.
Job Summary
We are hiring now and want someone who can start right away. We need a field leader who has seen it all and still takes pride in a clean rack. You will run job sites, lead small crews and contract labor, and own the quality of every pull, termination, splice and test that leaves your hands. You will work with little oversight, solve problems on the spot and tell us plainly what the site needs.
This is a road job. You will spend 80 to 90 percent of your time traveling to project sites, so you will often be the only Summit person on the job. You are the face of Summit to our customers and to every other trade there. How you carry yourself in a tense walkthrough with a GC matters as much as your splice loss.
What You'll Do
Lead installations from first pull to final certification, setting the daily plan for your crew and holding the standard. Pull, terminate and test CAT6 and CAT6A copper in commercial and multifamily buildings, routed to TIA-568 and TIA-569. Install, fusion splice and terminate single-mode and multimode fiber: backbone, risers, trunks, LC, SC and MPO connectivity.
Certify copper and fiber with Fluke DSX and OTDR, then troubleshoot what fails: loss budgets, crosstalk, bad terminations, damaged links. Build and dress MDF and IDF racks: patch panels, cable management, switches, UPS, labeled to TIA-606. Install cabling and devices for video surveillance and access control systems. Train and quality-check junior technicians and subcontractors, and run toolbox talks and PPE compliance on site.
Report from the field every day: progress, problems, change orders, materials, and what you need from the office to keep moving. Keep accurate time, expense and as-built documentation, so the next person always has what they need. What You Bring 5 or more years of hands-on commercial low-voltage field work, including time leading a crew.
BICSI certified. Installer 2 Copper and Installer 2 Optical Fiber at minimum. BICSI Technician is a plus. RCDD earns serious attention. Expert-level copper and fiber terminations, large cable pulls and fusion splicing. Real experience with certification testers and OTDR traces, and the judgment to read them. Working knowledge of TIA standards, NEC Article 800, firestopping and bend-radius discipline.
OSHA 10 required, OSHA 30 preferred. Aerial and scissor lift qualified, or able to qualify quickly. A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (no DUIs, no reckless driving citations). Willing and able to travel 80 to 90 percent of the time, including multi-week stretches away from home. Available to start immediately.
Authorized to work in the United States. Summit does not sponsor employment visas. Who Succeeds Here Independent. You need a scope and a deadline, not a babysitter. That matters even more when the office is a few states away. Fast on your feet. When the drawings are wrong and the ceiling is full, you find the path and keep the job moving.
A clear reporter. We know what is happening on your site before we have to ask. Composed. Customers, GCs, electricians and property managers walk away trusting Summit because of how you handled them. Relentless. You work hard, you finish what you start, and you leave every site cleaner than you found it. Travel: 80–90% Plan on being on the road most weeks.
The role is based in Salt Lake City, but the work is on project sites across the Intermountain West (Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana) and on fly-out jobs beyond that. Projects typically run a week or longer, and back-to-back assignments are common. If you need to sleep in your own bed most nights, this is not the job.
If you like the road and want to own the work wherever it is, it is. What You Get Ownership of real projects, with your name on the quality. A company vehicle and the tools to do the work right. A growth path built on impact, not tenure: Lead to Low Voltage Engineer, with support for BICSI Technician and RCDD. A small, high-talent-density team where good work gets noticed fast.
To Apply: We are interviewing now! Send your resume, your current BICSI credentials and your earliest start date. Tell us about the hardest job site you have led and what you did about it. Pay Rate Type: Hourly If you're looking for a career with a growing company where you are part of a team dedicated to making a difference, you'll enjoy your career with us !
