Summary of Responsibilities : The men’s and women’s golf head coach provides overall direction of the program which competes in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) and NCAA Division III. The primary responsibility for the head coach is to develop a consistently competitive program through the instruction of student-athletes during practice sessions, pre-game preparation, and athletic contests.
In addition to instructing student-athletes on how to perform their sport, they will also provide instruction on physical health, team concepts and safety. Another primary responsibility for the head coach is the recruitment and retention of a full roster of student-athletes set at an appropriate number as determined by the coach and the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics.
The coach also assists admissions in recruiting prospective students who express interest in participating in the program. The role of Athletic Operations oversees all aspects of game day events. Additionally, this role will schedule practices and events within the athletic facilities, including the scheduling of student workers, reserving locker room space, weight room space and officials.
Essential Responsibilities : (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.) The essential responsibility of the men’s and women’s golf head coach is to coach (teach) student athletes in their sport. They are charged with helping each individual student-athlete reach their full potential in the athletic arena through instruction of physical health, team concepts, and safety.
Coaches all aspects of the assigned sport to include but not limited to: Model Christian attitudes and behaviors for student-athletes, students, staff, and fans. Conduct practices to instruct student-athletes in game strategies and techniques of the sport. Instruct players on proper conditioning and safe practice/ play techniques to avoid injuries.
Assess players’ skills during practices and competitions and provide correction and instruction to improve player’s skills and overall performance. Instruct players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. Maintains up-do-date knowledge of, and compliance with, Geneva College, NCAA Division III, and PAC rules and regulations.
Schedules pre-season and in-season contests as well as organizing practices and one play day during the non-traditional season in consultation with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics. Organizes and conducts practices and conditioning sessions within the rules of NCAA Division III. Coordinates the distribution, collection, and storage of athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies (during the season and at its conclusion) and the collection of fees for lost equipment and uniforms by student-athletes.
Works with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics and Connoquenessing Country Club to organize practices and competitions. Fields competitive teams when playing other Division III colleges and universities. This is to be assessed over a three-to-five-year time span with the team being in contention for conference championships on a periodic basis.
Demonstrates concern for the spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional well-being of each team member: Actively encourages and supports the Christian faith of team members, which includes encouraging and instructing them in spiritual disciplines such as church attendance, prayer, and Bible study. In the case of non-Christian team members, actively encourages them to consider the claims of Christ on their lives.
Actively encourage, support, and educate team members on the importance of academic success by encouraging or ensuring regular class attendance, monitoring grades, and working to minimize conflicts between athletic and academic responsibilities. Actively encourage, support, and educate team members on the importance of their physical well-being by working with the training staff and other appropriate medical personnel to ensure that the student-athletes are physically ready to participate, which includes looking for signs of eating disorders or the use of illegal and/or unhealthful drugs and supplements and taking appropriate preventive measures and establishing healthy workout and practice schedules.
Actively encourages and supports the psychological and emotional well-being of team members, provides appropriate mentoring and life guidance, and seeks professional assistance when circumstances warrant. Recruitment: Assists in the recruiting of student-athletes in line with college policy, NCAA Division III, and PAC regulations.
Works closely with the admissions department to this end. Will seek to achieve the recruiting goals set on a year-to-year basis with the consistent use of Slate. Athletic Operations: Oversee the scheduling of practice times and facilities within the fieldhouse and outside athletic venues. Schedules and oversee the hiring of student workers associated with athletic events.
Set up for home events with student staff Maintain a presence at all home athletic events to assist with security and game day operations Assists in the approval of timecards for student workers. Assists in the organization and planning of special events such as the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet and annual athletic Golf Outing.
Performs related duties as assigned. Financial Management: Adheres to budget guidelines and keeps records and writes reports. Works with the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics, the College’s business office, facilities, and other offices as appropriate to purchase necessary sport-specific athletic equipment and supplies.
Ensures safe and cost-effective travel to and from contests. Oversee the process of raising additional funds for men’s and women’s golf with approval of the Chief Athletics Officer/Director of Athletics. Supervision: Supervise student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning/directing work, coaching, evaluating performance, affirming, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment. Other: Actively participates in athletic department functions and meetings, and in college committees as assigned. Maintains effective working relationships with administrative staff, coaches, student-athletes, and other staff.
Performs related duties as assigned. Organize, promote, manage, and execute youth and/or recruit camps during the school year or summer months. Basic Coaching Performance Criteria: DIII Recruiting . Geneva programs recruit strong mission fits and good mission prospects. We set annual team targets for new students (freshmen and transfers) with squad size, athletic program, and institutional admissions goals in mind.

DIII Retention. Geneva programs recruit graduates, not freshmen. We recruit Geneva student athletes to participate fully in the Ministry of education.
Athletic recruiting aims to reflect and contribute to the quality of the spectrum of the Geneva College student body. DIII Conference Leadership. We expect our teams to be playing in meaningful games throughout the conference season and to finish in the top half of the “conference standings” with winning conference records.

Qualifications
Minimum: Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education or related field. Experience: Two years coaching at high school (head coach) and/or two years coaching at collegiate level. Skill/Abilities: Valid Driver’s license. A willingness to travel, including overnight and weekends. The ability to work evenings and weekends.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Operate a PC and related software. Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith.
An eligible candidate must understand and support the College’s “Foundational Concepts of Christian Education” by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work. Preferred: Education/Certification: Master’s or equivalent in the field of Physical Education.
Experience: Three to five years coaching at the collegiate level.
