Job description
Job Title: Health, Safety & Environmental Specialist Job Description: Supports the implementation and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental programs that promote regulatory compliance, risk reduction, and operational excellence. Partners with operations, engineering, quality, human resources, and site leadership to maintain a safe and healthy work environment while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and environmental requirements.
Provides technical expertise, training, auditing, and program support that strengthen Trystar’s safety culture and environmental stewardship initiatives. In this role you will: Support the implementation and execution of health, safety, and environmental programs, policies, and procedures. Promote a culture of safety by providing guidance, coaching, and support to employees and site leadership.
Conduct safety inspections, audits, risk assessments, and workplace observations to identify hazards and improvement opportunities. Assist in maintaining compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local health, safety, and environmental regulations. Deliver and coordinate safety, health, and environmental training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors.
Support incident reporting, investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation. Monitor and maintain environmental programs, permits, records, and reporting activities, including waste management, wastewater, air permitting, and stormwater compliance. Partner with human resources and leadership teams to support onboarding, workers' compensation activities, and return-to-work programs.
Maintain HSE documentation, records, permits, and compliance files in accordance with retention requirements. Support emergency preparedness activities, safety committees, and emergency response teams. Provide HSE input on capital projects, process changes, equipment installations, and operational initiatives. Assist in the development, tracking, and reporting of HSE performance metrics and improvement plans.
Support compliance programs including, but not limited to, lockout/tagout (LOTO), electrical safety, confined space, personal protective equipment (PPE), powered industrial trucks (PIT), hearing conservation, respiratory protection, and industrial hygiene initiatives. Identify opportunities to strengthen safety performance, environmental compliance, and operational effectiveness through continuous improvement activities.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field required. 3+ years of experience in health, safety, environmental, industrial hygiene, or related roles. Experience supporting health, safety, and environmental programs within manufacturing, industrial, construction, engineering, or related environments preferred.
Experience conducting safety training, inspections, audits, investigations, or regulatory compliance activities. Working knowledge of occupational safety regulations, environmental requirements, risk assessment methodologies, and accident prevention practices. Experience working in cross-functional environments and supporting operational teams.
Ability to communicate clearly with production employees, technical professionals, and organizational leaders.Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and HSE-related systems or databases. ASP GSP, or other relevant HSE certifications preferred. Spanish language proficiency preferred. Ability to travel up to 25%.
