JOB SUMMARY
The Manufacturing Engineer Intern is a temporary role that provides a combination of hands-on and computer-based tasks to support the Manufacturing Engineering team in a fast-paced, high-precision manufacturing environment. This multidisciplinary team includes electrical, optical, mechanical, and firmware engineers dedicated to sustaining and improving the production of laser systems.
In this role, the intern will contribute to a wide range of initiatives focused on continuous improvement of existing manufacturing processes, while also supporting the setup and validation of new production areas. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in the disposition and organization of NCM’s (Non-Conforming Materials).
- Assist in facility maintenance and assembly/installation of new equipment.
- Create/modify technical documentation including BOM’s (bill of materials), CAD drawings, work instructions, and basic documentation.
- Collaborate with production, engineering, and purchasing to support product development.
- Build, test, and troubleshoot optical, electrical, and mechanical systems using standard testing equipment (DMM, calipers, etc.).
- Provide regular status updates on tasks and projects to Manufacturing Engineering Manager.
- Create risk analysis reports on commonly failed components.
- Assist in the implementation of ECN’s (Engineering change notice) and change requests.
- Participate in design reviews, quality meetings, and risk assessment initiatives.
- Perform entry-level calculations, simulation, and data collection for electrical, optical, and mechanical systems.
- Adhere to industry regulations, export controls (ITAR/EAR), quality standards (AS9100), and cybersecurity requirements (CMMC).
- Other duties assigned by the Manufacturing Engineering Manager. REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Computer literacy including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Hands-on experience through coursework, lab work, or projects
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Highly organized, with an ability to efficiently handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent judgment, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail. PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a STEM or closely related field.
- Knowledge of mechanical & electrical assemblies.
- Familiar with CAD software (Solid. Works & Altium preferred).
- Familiar with lean manufacturing and 5S principles. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be capable of working in front of a computer for long periods of time.
- Must be able to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
- Good close-up vision and steady hands to manipulate small components.
