Salem University is seeking qualified, student-centered Adjunct Faculty to teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in Physical Education within the University's Education programs. The Adjunct Faculty

  • Physical Education position is responsible for providing effective, engaging, and academically rigorous instruction that supports student learning, professional development, and achievement of established course and program learning outcomes. Faculty are expected to demonstrate current subject-matter expertise in physical education, instructional methods, curriculum development, and related educational practices while preparing students to apply their knowledge in academic and professional environments. Teaching assignments may be offered on campus at Salem University in Salem, West Virginia, remotely, or through blended instructional formats based on program needs, course scheduling, faculty qualifications, and availability. Adjunct teaching assignments are made on an as-needed, course-by-course basis and are not guaranteed from term to term.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are representative of the responsibilities of this position. Additional duties may be assigned to support institutional priorities. Instruction & Student Learning Provide effective instruction for assigned undergraduate and/or graduate Physical Education courses in accordance with approved curriculum, learning outcomes, and University expectations.

Deliver instruction in the assigned format, including on-campus, online, or blended courses. Demonstrate current subject-matter expertise in physical education and related instructional practices. Utilize evidence-based teaching strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and application of course concepts.

Connect physical education theory with practical instructional applications, student development, and professional teaching practices. Incorporate appropriate instructional methods, educational technologies, and learning resources to support student success. Maintain an instructional environment that promotes academic rigor, professionalism, accessibility, and student achievement.

Student Engagement & Academic Support Foster a student-centered learning environment through meaningful interaction, engagement, and timely communication. Demonstrate enthusiasm for student learning and provide appropriate academic encouragement and support. Respond to student questions and communications within established University expectations.

Identify students experiencing academic difficulty and provide appropriate instructional support or referrals to University resources. Encourage student participation, persistence, accountability, and course completion. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and interactions with students. Assessment, Grading & Feedback Evaluate student learning using approved assignments, examinations, projects, rubrics, and other established assessment methods.

Provide timely, thorough, and constructive feedback that supports academic growth and professional development. Utilize established grading criteria and rubrics consistently. Monitor student participation and academic progress throughout assigned courses. Maintain accurate and timely grades within the University's Learning Management System.

Evaluate student achievement of established course and program learning outcomes. Submit final grades and required academic documentation within established deadlines. Maintain appropriate documentation supporting student assessment and grading decisions. Course & Learning Management System Responsibilities Maintain assigned courses within the University's Learning Management System in accordance with established standards.

Utilize instructional technologies and digital resources to enhance student learning and engagement. Ensure course announcements, instructional materials, assignments, assessments, and grades remain current and accessible. Follow established course structures, approved curriculum, and instructional expectations. Promptly communicate course-content or technology concerns through appropriate University channels.

Support consistent delivery of instructional materials and learning activities across assigned teaching formats. Curriculum & Academic Quality Collaborate with academic leadership and faculty to support continuous improvement of courses and academic programs. Provide feedback regarding course content, instructional materials, student engagement, learning outcomes, and opportunities for improvement.

Participate in course and program assessment activities as required. Support implementation of approved curriculum and instructional improvements. Maintain awareness of current developments in physical education, educational practices, and related professional standards. Promote the integration of current educational research and effective instructional strategies into assigned courses.

Faculty & University Responsibilities Participate in required program, departmental, faculty, or University meetings and training as assigned. Complete required faculty onboarding and professional-development activities. Follow expectations established in the Salem University Faculty Handbook and applicable academic policies and procedures.

Maintain accurate academic and student records. Protect confidential student information and comply with FERPA requirements. Maintain professional and timely communication with students, faculty, academic leadership, and University personnel. Adhere to University expectations regarding academic integrity, professional conduct, accessibility, and instructional quality.

Perform other faculty responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in physical education, Kinesiology, Health and Physical Education, Physical Education Pedagogy, or a closely related discipline, with graduate coursework appropriate to assigned teaching responsibilities. Minimum of 18 graduate semester credit hours in Physical Education or a closely related teaching discipline for candidates whose graduate degree is not directly within the assigned teaching discipline.

Previous college- or university-level teaching experience in Physical Education or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated professional experience in physical education teaching, curriculum, instruction, or a related educational environment. Demonstrated subject-matter expertise appropriate to assigned undergraduate and/or graduate courses.

Demonstrated proficiency with Learning Management Systems and instructional technology. Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success. Ability to successfully complete Salem University's required adjunct faculty onboarding and training before teaching.

Work Environment This position may provide instruction on campus at Salem University in Salem, West Virginia, remotely, or through blended instructional formats. On-campus assignments may involve classroom instruction and physical education instructional environments, depending on course requirements. Remote assignments require reliable internet connectivity, appropriate instructional technology, and the ability to maintain effective communication and engagement with students.

Teaching assignments are based on enrollment, academic need, faculty qualifications, scheduling, and availability. Appointment as an adjunct faculty member does not guarantee a specific number of courses or continued teaching assignments from term to term.
