Job description

Minimum qualifications:

  • JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 7 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.

  • 7 years of experience providing legal advice pertaining to compliance, regulatory affairs, or corporate governance within a tech environment.

  • Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience advising internal or external oversight compliance governance bodies, including preparing materials for executive-level meetings.
  • Experience with compliance program design, regulatory investigations, audit processes, shareholder litigation, or regulatory settlements.
  • Experience managing cross-functional projects and partnering effectively with stakeholders in a matrixed organization.
  • Experience working with technology companies and an ability to understand complex technical issues and technical risk domains.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to simplify complex regulatory issues.

About the job

As a Central Advisory and Governance Counsel, you will join a team that provides legal and compliance guidance to support the functioning of the Alphabet-wide Compliance Program. Reporting to the Director of Central Advisory and Governance, this role involves helping ensure reporting, risk management, and compliance with high- and critical-risk regulations.Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

US: $252000 - $351000 (USD) + 25% bonus target + equity + benefits

Responsibilities

  • Advise on compliance programs, standards, and foundational program elements (e.g., program scope, function, and operation) based on regulatory requirements and guidance.
  • Develop and implement frameworks, prioritization models, and compliance taxonomies to help standardize and track cross-company compliance efforts.
  • Support internal management and external oversight governance bodies, including advising on board and governance documentation and materials, preparing executive/management reporting frameworks, and accurately identifying trends to guide oversight.
  • Serve as a key Regulatory Affairs partner and advisor on Internal Audit processes, Compliance Monitoring and Assurance, and non-regulatory audit programs.
  • Provide legal and compliance advice on requirements originating from regulatory settlements, consent decrees, litigation, shareholder demands, and enforcement orders.
