Job Summary

The Urgent Care Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) provides comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation and treatment for patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, and occupational health needs in the Urgent Care setting. The APC practices independently within the scope of licensure while collaborating closely with Emergency Department physicians, laboratory, imaging, rehabilitation, mental health, and other support services.

The APC serves as an integral member of OMC's integrated Emergency Department/Urgent Care team, promoting efficient patient flow, timely medical decision-making, and high-quality patient-centered care. The APC is expected to recognize patients requiring Emergency Department evaluation, initiate appropriate workups, stabilize patients when indicated, and facilitate seamless transitions of care.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program Successful completion of the applicable national certification examination and current board certification (or board eligibility if a new graduate) through the appropriate certifying body (NCCPA for Physician Assistants or AANP/ANCC for Nurse Practitioners).

Current Minnesota and Wisconsin PA or APRN license in good standing. Current DEA registration Current BLS and ACLS certification required; PALS and ATLS preferred. DOT Medical Examiner certification required or obtained within six months of hire. Minimum one year of Urgent Care, Emergency Medicine, or Family Medicine experience preferred.

Credentialed and privileged to perform approved procedures.

Responsibilities include

The APC provides direct patient care while supporting the operational goals of the Urgent Care and Emergency Department. The clinician exercises sound clinical judgment, maintains productivity expectations, and promotes collaboration across departments. Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with acute illnesses and injuries.

Perform DOT physicals, pre-placement examinations, workers' compensation evaluations, and other occupational medicine services. Order, interpret, and act upon laboratory studies, imaging, and point-of-care testing. Perform approved procedures including laceration repair, splinting, incision and drainage, wound care, nail procedures, foreign body removal, and other credentialed procedures.

Recognize patients requiring Emergency Department evaluation and coordinate transfer of care. Initiate stabilization and diagnostic workups prior to ED transfer when appropriate. Collaborate with ED clinicians during periods of high volume to support patient throughput and safe care. Provide patient education, discharge instructions, return precautions, and follow-up recommendations.

Complete accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record. Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and continuing education. Maintain compliance with organizational policies, regulatory standards, and evidence-based practice. Maintain required licensure, certifications, participate in continuing medical education, and complete mandatory education timely.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The successful APC demonstrates exceptional clinical assessment and procedural skills, strong critical thinking, excellent communication, and the ability to manage multiple patients in a fast-paced environment. The APC must be comfortable practicing autonomously while recognizing personal limitations and seeking consultation when appropriate.

The ability to foster teamwork, adapt to change, and exemplify OMC's Core Behavior Standards is essential. Physical Requirements for the Role: This position requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, reaching, stooping, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. The clinician must possess the visual acuity and manual dexterity necessary to perform patient assessments, procedures, and other fine motor tasks.

The role also requires prolonged periods of sitting while utilizing a computer, keyboard, and other electronic devices for documentation, order entry, and communication. The ability to rapidly respond to patient care needs and medical emergencies is essential. Work Environment: This position is performed in a busy rural Critical Access Hospital Urgent Care environment with fluctuating patient volumes and acuity.

The APC may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, sharps, hazardous substances, and patients experiencing behavioral health crises. Frequent collaboration with the Emergency Department is expected to ensure patients receive care in the most appropriate setting while maintaining efficient throughput and exceptional patient experience.
