Job Description: Deputy Sheriff Qualifications: High school diploma Valid Louisiana driver’s license Minimum of 21 years of age Skills: Enforcement of laws and ordinances Crime investigation and evidence gathering Emergency response and safety procedures Leadership and decision-making Use and care of firearms and law enforcement equipment Job Summary: Under general supervision, the Deputy Sheriff supervises and performs general duty police work with a shift or unit of the Sheriff’s Office involving a wide range of duties performed to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, and preserve order within the community.
General Duties and Responsibilities: Enforces all felony and misdemeanor laws of Louisiana. Patrols an assigned area in an assigned unit for the purpose of observing the area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety, investigating complaints, and enforcing laws while maintaining high visibility.
Investigates and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions to the proper authority. Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims and gathers physical evidence and preserves for court. Conducts follow up investigations as needed. Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary.
Follows proper procedures when making arrests. Serves or delivers warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official paperwork promptly and accurately. Serves as a witness in court and provides evidence in court as required. Responds to emergency calls such as robberies, burglaries, kidnappings, assaults, and murders.
Practices safety procedures in answering and responding to calls. Checks residential and commercial property for security as requested. Assists motorists in various situations as needed. Contacts complainants and/or victims of crimes within a reasonable length of time; keeps complainants or victims informed of progress of investigations.
Prepares, processes, and/or transmits various reports as required. Recording information concerning events that took place during tour of duty and records such activity in the manner directed by the department. Maintains weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition. Transports mental patients and prisoners to prescribed locations as necessary.
Accounts for and transports evidence coming into custody. Answers questions asked by the general public and works with juveniles and adults in related matters. Refers public to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required. Works under stressful, high-risk conditions. Makes decisions at crime scenes which may be centered on life or death situations.
Decisions are based on the safest procedures to be followed to ensure safety to individuals involved and fellow deputies. Attends shift meetings and/or training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of operations and to promote job performance. Maintains the required level of proficiency in the use of firearms and driving skills.
Takes active charge in serious or unusual situations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of state statutes, laws, ordinances, and regulations applicable to Iberville Parish. Knowledge of laws of arrest, search and seizure, search warrants, and the rules for handling evidentiary matters, and/or matters of detention and security of prisoners.
Knowledge of the political, social, and economic structure of Iberville Parish, the geography of the Parish and its unincorporated areas, and the general roadways. Knowledge of parish and state court practices. Knowledge and practical application of first aid. Ability to lead by example. Ability to react quickly and calmly and direct the work of subordinates in an emergency.
Skilled in the use and care of firearms, motor vehicles, and related law enforcement equipment. Ability to perform all the essential duties and requirements of the Deputy Sheriff position. Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
