Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job description
Exploration Team Members (ETMs) will perform subsurface exploration duties using conventional drilling or in-situ testing techniques. Drill methods may include auger drilling, mud rotary drilling, air rotary drilling, and diamond bit coring techniques. In-situ testing techniques may include cone penetration testing (CPT), pressure meter testing, and rock dilatometer testing.
Work may also include the installation of instrumentation such as piezometers, monitor wells and inclinometers. Work as part of a multiple person team on projects. ETMs will perform daily tasks including survey and locate drilling points; conduct site reconnaissance; load/unload tooling, materials and samples; classify soil and rock samples; perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on drilling equipment, prepare internal (daily field forms) and external (DOT Logs) paperwork.
Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and implement solutions for routine to moderately complex equipment issues, with guidance from management or senior Equipment and Tool Mechanics (ETMs) as needed. Work independently with support from the supervisor. Service and maintain multiple drill rigs and perform trailer repairs as needed.
Repair and/or replace faulty parts and systems and perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes. Operate and test drilling equipment following repairs to verify proper functionality. Inspect equipment and complete scheduled maintenance activities. Follow all safety policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Participate in pre-task planning and report safety concerns to management. Maintain quality standards on all maintenance and repair projects. Develop and execute maintenance plans and equipment upgrades. Maintain accurate work logs, repair documentation, and maintenance records. Monitor inventory levels of repair parts, tools, and equipment and order replacements as needed.
Ensure DOT inspections remain current and schedule inspections when required. High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience. Proficient in geotechnical drilling equipment repair. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card within the first 30 days of employment.
Preferred Certifications and Skills Experience with heavy equipment, drill rig, and trailer repair. Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and diesel systems. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred. Welding and fabrication experience. Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills. Knowledge of DOT regulations and fleet maintenance requirements.
Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, schematics, and technical drawings. Strong organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills. OSHA safety training or other relevant safety certifications preferred.
