Senior Prototype Engineer

Due to our continued growth we are now recruiting for Senior Prototype Engineer to be based at our o ffice in Warwick . Our Engineering Research and Development department (ER&D) is a fast growing function within Tata Technologies Limited that is assembled to work on exciting projects globally for multiple customers.
It comprises highly specialized engineers across Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Heavy Machinery. THE ROLE The Senior Prototype Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering prototype builds across vehicle and product development programmes. The role provides technical leadership throughout the prototype lifecycle, ensuring engineering requirements are translated into robust prototype solutions that support design verification, validation, and programme delivery objectives.
Working cross-functionally with Design, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Programme Management, and external suppliers, the Prototype Lead Engineer will ensure prototype builds are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead prototype build planning and execution from concept through validation phases.
- Develop and maintain prototype delivery plans, timing schedules, and resource requirements.
- Coordinate build readiness activities across engineering and operations teams.
- Manage prototype build gateways and milestone reviews.
- Ensure programme risks are identified, assessed, mitigated, and communicated effectively.
- Provide technical leadership during prototype development activities.
- Support engineering feasibility reviews and design maturation.
- Ensure prototype solutions meet functional and programme requirements.
- Drive issue identification, prioritisation, investigation, and resolution.
- Facilitate engineering reviews and lessons learned activities.
- Lead prototype build events and support workshop activities.
- Coordinate prototype part procurement and availability.
- Monitor build progress and rapidly resolve build issues.
- Ensure engineering documentation and build records are maintained accurately.
- Support vehicle and component evaluation activities.
- Act as the primary interface between engineering, manufacturing, programme, and supplier teams.
- Communicate programme status, key risks, and recovery activities.
- Build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Present technical status updates to senior leadership teams.
- Ensure compliance with Tata Technologies and customer quality standards.
- Support root cause investigations and corrective action implementation.
- Ensure prototype build activities are conducted in accordance with Health, Safety, and Environmental requirements.
- Drive first-time-right delivery principles across prototype operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve prototype processes and delivery performance.
- Support the implementation of Lean Engineering and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
- Capture lessons learned and integrate best practices into future programmes.
- Contribute to departmental capability development and knowledge sharing. KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE Essential
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
- Demonstrable experience within prototype engineering, product development, manufacturing engineering, or vehicle development environments. Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration.
- Project Management qualification (APM, PRINCE2, PMP, or equivalent).
- Lean Six Sigma qualification.
- Experience leading prototype build activities within an engineering environment.
- Experience managing cross-functional engineering programmes.
- Understanding of engineering release and change management processes.
- Experience of stakeholder and supplier management.
- Strong project planning and delivery experience.
- Automotive industry experience.
- Experience supporting vehicle development or validation programmes.
