Job description
The Position: The Senior Application Engineer, PV Modeling, will be a key member of Sungrow’s U.S. PV Modeling team which is part of the PV Product Solutions (PV AE) team, supporting the company’s PV products and technical solutions across North America. We are seeking an experienced engineer with a strong background in power systems, power electronics, inverter controls, and power system modeling and simulation.
The position will provide advanced technical support for utility-scale PV and inverter-based resource (IBR) projects, with a strong focus on grid interconnection studies, model application and validation, and troubleshooting. The successful candidate will work closely with customers, utilities, consultants, Sungrow’s U.
S. teams, and HQ R&D teams. The position will also contribute to emerging technologies and applications, including grid-forming inverters, microgrids, and data center applications, as well as evolving North American grid requirements and industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Support customers with grid interconnection, commissioning, and post-commissioning power system modeling activities for PV inverter and IBR projects using PSS®E, PSLF, PSCAD, and related simulation tools. Serve as a senior technical member of the PV Modeling team, troubleshooting advanced EMT modeling and simulation issues and developing practical, technically sound solutions for customers.
Support application, validation, and integration of Sungrow inverter models for customer and grid interconnection studies. Track technical requirements and market needs from key customers and maintain effective communication among customers, U.S. front-end technical teams, and HQ R&D. Provide direct technical support to customers and the Sales team and serve as a trusted technical advisor to customers' engineering teams for modeling.
Support new inverter technologies and solutions, including grid-forming controls, microgrids, PV plus energy storage hybrid, and data center applications. Participate in technical exchanges with utilities, ISOs/RTOs, consultants, and other grid stakeholders to understand emerging grid requirements, policies, and technical trends.
Participate in industry organizations and technical activities, including IEEE, ESIG, and other relevant industry groups, and contribute to industry standards and technical discussions as appropriate. Support internal technical documentation, model documentation, and engineering knowledge management. Participate in coordination with product and R&D teams to communicate customer feedback, application requirements, and North American market needs.
Interpret and evaluate applicable IEEE, UL, IEC, NEC, grid-code, and other North American regulatory and interconnection requirements, and provide technical input to product and model development. Support field service and application engineering teams with system-level troubleshooting and provide engineering guidance as needed.
Minimum Requirements Minimum 5 years of professional engineering experience, preferably in power systems, renewable energy, power electronics, or inverter-based resources. Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with power system simulation (EMT focused) and modeling tools, with strong experience in PSCAD and one of PSS®E and PSLF.
Minimum 2 years of experience in the solar/PV industry. Experience with energy storage systems and other inverter-based resources is preferred. Strong understanding of power system dynamics, inverter controls, grid interconnection, RMS and/or EMT modeling. Demonstrated experience troubleshooting complex technical and modeling issues.
Experience with model validation, plant-level studies, grid interconnection studies, or inverter control applications is highly desirable. RTlab/RTDS HIL experience is a plus. Experience with power electronics, power systems, and/or control system design and validation is preferred. Experience with EPC engineering, product development, system-level engineering, or technical trade-off studies is a plus.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, consultants, utilities, internal engineering teams, and management. Strong initiative, organizational skills, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced and collaborative environment with remote co-workers.
Bilingual English/Chinese capability is preferred but not required.
Education
and Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college, preferably with a concentration in Power Electronics, Power Systems or Control Systems. Relevant experience in the solar, energy storage, or broader IBR industry is required. Ph.D. or advanced technical specialization in a relevant field is a plus.
Core Competencies Strong technical problem-solving and analytical skills. Advanced power system modeling and simulation capability. Strong understanding of inverter-based resources and grid integration. System-level and product-level engineering mindset. Strong customer communication and technical support orientation.
Ability to independently investigate complex technical problems and develop practical solutions. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working across geographic and organizational boundaries. Travel 15% to 30%, including customer meetings, technical workshops, industry conferences, utility/grid engagements, and other business needs.
