Duties include providing support to campuses and planning and initiating appropriate activities that meet the needs of students and families, ensure integrity of the district's program and vision, and ensure district-wide program consistency. The Specialist provides assistance and expertise to teachers that align with state and federal requirements, comply with district procedures and protocols and support district goals and objectives. Reports To: Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Responsibilities: Instructional Management Assist with selection and development of professional learning and curriculum resources to support the integration of health education content and CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) Provide assistance and ongoing support for campus wellness teams, to include technical support, professional development, and support grant related activities Attend campus and/or district coordinated school health/school wellness events as appropriate Develop and maintain campus coordinated school health/school wellness calendar for the district Support campus implementation of coordinated school health program and other school wellness initiatives through site visits and trainings designed to meet individual campus needs Participate in professional organizations to keep abreast of emerging issues and trends in related programs, best practices and services Disseminate current professional ideas, information, and updates to the appropriate district personnel in the effort to develop new curriculum, policies, and programs Interact with parents, agencies, and community to enhance the understanding of district initiatives and priorities and to elicit support and assistance Maintain accurate records and develop reports as required Serves as district liaison for community and non-profit organizations that promote health and wellbeing Serves as an instructional leader in the coordination of effective Districtwide instructional programs, particularly related to assigned subject area(s) Assists in selecting state-adopted textbooks and other instructional materials for local use in the instructional program Works with principals, planning and decision-making (PDM) teams, counselors, and faculties to disseminate information regarding current research and proven strategies that improve student achievement Conducts meetings with physical education and other staff as appropriate Promotes high expectations, and provides motivation for excellence in staff/student performance Collaborates with other physical education members to foster effective decision making, high morale, and enthusiasm within the Physical Education Dept. Values the organization by maintaining a positive working environment, adhering to the District's mission statement, recognizing various roles and functions within the District and campuses Undertakes/completes assignments in an appropriate and timely manner to achieve organizational goals Serves as a positive role model, and works cooperatively with others in designing and promoting quality instructional programs Identifies and secures the financial support necessary to provide equipment, instructional materials, services, and staffing related to the District's instructional programs that meet local, state, and national standards Facilitates consistent, equitable student management plans through staff development or onsite technical assistance Provides assistance in assessing the academic needs of students Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner as defined in Board policy and the TEA Code of Ethics for Educators Writes grants as appropriate to supplement the Physical Education budget Performs other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities: None Fiscal and Budgetary Responsibilities: Assist in development and allocation of the Health and Physical Education District budget ensure that programs are cost effective and that local and donated funds are managed properly Working Conditions Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) Ability to maintain emotional control under stress Ability to make quick effective decisions Ability to receive information and/ or instruction from internal/ external customers through spoken expression Ability to manipulate tools/ equipment/ keyboards Ability to convey information and/ or instruction to internal/ external customers through spoken expression Ability to perform work while standing and/ or walking for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours a day Ability to see detailed information, naturally or with correction Must have valid Texas driver's license.
