Package Finishing Supervisor
Job description
Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced Package Finishing Supervisor to drive quality, efficiency, and team success across our finishing operations. This is a hands-on "working lead" role: you will operate equipment alongside your team while coordinating daily production priorities, coaching operators, and supporting CAD package design/sampling for clients.
The ideal candidate blends technical expertise in die cutting and folding/gluing with strong leadership skills, a continuous improvement mindset, and an unwavering commitment to shop-floor safety.
Key Responsibilities
Department Leadership & Operations Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and direction to finishing department personnel; assign tasks and adjust staffing to hit tight schedules. Play an active role in personnel decisions, including interviewing, hiring input, performance management, and corrective actions. Plan and organize workflow based on job tickets, production schedules, and delivery commitments.
Lead cross-training initiatives to expand team skill sets and increase overall shop capacity. Foster a collaborative, positive environment while interfacing smoothly with press, prepress, shipping, and customer service teams. Hands-On Production & Equipment Setup Set up, adjust, and operate package finishing equipment—specifically die cutters and folder/gluers.
Guide and assist operators with complex setups, mechanical fine-tuning, and active troubleshooting. Continuously monitor machine speeds and production runs to optimize efficiency, minimize waste, and maintain strict quality standards. Perform ongoing product inspections; resolve quality deviations promptly and escalate when necessary.
Structural Packaging Design & Technical Support Review structural drawings, schematics, dielines, and job specifications prior to setup. Develop custom structural packaging designs and physical CAD samples for client products using ArtiosCAD, Eng. View, or similar software. Verify that new packaging designs are fully manufacturable using existing in-house machinery.
Safety, Maintenance & Process Improvement Enforce all workplace safety standards, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding compliance, and mandatory PPE usage. Perform routine equipment maintenance and workspace teardown/cleaning after production runs; verify tools and machinery remain safe and operational. Identify process bottlenecks, recommend lean/continuous improvement updates, and share best practices across the department.
Perform other production tasks and duties as assigned.
Qualifications
& Skills Required: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Ability to work 7:00 AM-3:30 PM M-F with occasional weekend work. 3–5 years of hands-on package finishing experience (die cutting and folding/gluing) in a commercial printing or packaging environment. 1+ years of experience in a lead, supervisory, or formal/informal trainer role.
Strong mechanical comprehension with the ability to read job tickets, schematics, dielines, and structural drawings. Working math skills (fractions, decimals) and experience with precision measuring tools. Basic computer literacy for production logging, shift scheduling, and internal communications. Flexibility to work overtime and adjusting shift hours as production volume requires.
Preferred: Hands-on structural CAD design experience using software such as ArtiosCAD or Eng. View. Practical knowledge of Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement methodologies. Valid Forklift Certification (or ability to become certified upon hire). Physical Requirements & Working Conditions Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential physical functions.
Standing & Walking: Ability to stand and walk on the shop floor for the majority of the shift, typically 8 to 10 hours. Lifting & Moving: Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 50 lbs; move heavier loads using material-handling equipment or team lifts. Movement & Dexterity: Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, and repetitive hand/arm motions.
Fine manual dexterity required to adjust equipment and handle sharp tooling. Visual Acuity: Close vision and depth perception to inspect finished packaging against technical specs and design proofs. Sedentary/Computer Work: Periodic sitting and computer usage for CAD structural design, job scheduling, and production tracking.
Why You'll Like Working Here Stability with Momentum: Join a stable, growing industry leader with over 80 years of operational excellence. Comprehensive Health Coverage: Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance options, HSA, and Telemedicine services. Financial Protection: Company-provided Group Life Insurance, plus voluntary Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Supplemental Life, Hospital Indemnity, Accident, and Critical Illness coverage.
Retirement Savings: 401(k) plan with company match to help secure your financial future. Work-Life Balance: Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) and paid company holidays. Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Free 24/7 support including crisis intervention, individual, marital, and family counseling, financial guidance, senior care support, and educational workshops.
