About the Role
The Substitute Teacher plays a critical role in maintaining continuity of instruction and classroom management in the absence of the regular teacher. This position requires the ability to quickly adapt to different classroom environments and grade levels, ensuring that students remain engaged and on track with their learning objectives.
The substitute teacher is responsible for delivering lesson plans, managing student behavior, and fostering a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere. They must be prepared to support diverse learners, including those with special education needs, and utilize differentiated instruction techniques to meet varied learning styles.
Ultimately, the substitute teacher ensures that educational standards are upheld and that students receive consistent support to achieve their academic goals.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; a bachelor's degree in education or related field is preferred. Valid substitute teaching certification or licensure as required by the state of employment. Demonstrated experience or coursework in elementary education or teaching. Basic proficiency in classroom management and instructional techniques.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with students and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with students requiring special education services. Knowledge of sign language to support communication with hearing-impaired students. Training or experience in creative writing and teaching reading strategies. Familiarity with differentiated instruction methods to tailor learning experiences. Previous substitute teaching experience in elementary education settings.
Responsibilities
Implement daily lesson plans provided by the regular teacher or develop appropriate instructional activities when plans are unavailable. Manage classroom behavior and maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. Record and maintain accurate student attendance and performance records. Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of students with diverse learning abilities, including those requiring special education services.
Communicate effectively with students, school staff, and administration regarding classroom activities and any issues that arise during the school day. Skills: The required skills such as classroom instruction, teaching reading, and differentiated instruction are essential for delivering effective lessons that accommodate diverse student needs.
Proficiency in student records management ensures accurate tracking of attendance and academic progress, which supports communication with school administration. Knowledge of sign language enhances communication accessibility for hearing-impaired students, fostering an inclusive classroom environment. Creative writing skills contribute to engaging lesson delivery and encourage student creativity.
Special education expertise allows the substitute teacher to modify instruction and provide appropriate support to students with individualized education plans, ensuring equitable learning opportunities.
