Job description
Hybrid
- In-person (3 days in office) Want to shape how an employee-owned engineering firm adopts AI? As Hazen’s AI Adoption & Governance Manager, you will lead the effort to make AI part of how every office and practice group works, with direct access to IT leadership and the authority to move quickly. If you are highly motivated, adaptable and energized by fast-moving technology, Hazen may be the place for you. This position, which reports directly to the Director of Information Technology, leads the day-to-day support, adoption and governance of the firm’s AI tools: enterprise assistants like Copilot and Claude, AI features inside engineering and design software, and internal automations. Serves as the link between IT, project teams and leadership, so that staff use AI tools productively, safely and within firm policy. This position will partner closely with senior members of the IT team and Design Technology, building on existing workflows and system requirements to shape how AI is supported across the firm. Candidates must work well in a team environment, be able to effectively prioritize and execute tasks, and be willing to learn and develop new skills that support the responsibilities outlined below. Because AI tools and the way Hazen uses them are changing quickly, the right person is nimble and responsive: able to reprioritize quickly, resolve issues as they arise, and adapt the support model as new tools and needs emerge. Within the first year, AI is part of how nearly everyone at Hazen works. Staff in every office and practice group use approved AI tools confidently, productively and safely, and the support, training and governance model keeps pace as the tools evolve. Why Hazen and Sawyer: Founded in 1951 by the son of Allen Hazen (developer of the Hazen-Williams equation), we are an employee-owned company with a singular focus on "all things water." Our work includes planning, design, and oversight of construction of environmental infrastructure – for water, wastewater, and stormwater management. We foster a work environment low on bureaucracy and high in creativity. We recruit talented professionals, provide them with challenging, interesting, and creative assignments, and furnish them with the tools they need to succeed. We currently have over 2,000 employees in 70+ offices throughout the United States, Latin America, Canada, and the UK. A flexible hybrid work schedule supports today's busy professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Own the support model for enterprise AI tools: intake, triage, escalation paths, knowledge base and service levels, in coordination with the Helpdesk Manager. Administer AI platforms: licensing, user provisioning, connectors and integrations, usage monitoring and cost tracking. Approve AI tools, pilots, integrations and configuration changes within firm policy, with the authority to act quickly and escalate to the Director of Information Technology only when risk, cost or a policy exception requires it.
Run adoption and training: onboarding sessions, prompt libraries, office hours and a champions network across offices and practice groups. Partner with Design Technology on AI in engineering workflows (BIM/CAD, GIS, modeling, document production) and on evaluating new tools. Monitor new AI tools and features, including Copilot, Claude and AI in engineering software, assess their impact and opportunity, and adapt the support model and guidance as the technology evolves.
Administer and uphold AI governance in partnership with the Director of Information Technology: the firm’s AI acceptable-use policy and its ongoing refinement, data classification (client confidentiality, CUI/ITAR where it applies), vendor security reviews, and records retention for AI outputs. Collect use cases from the business, prioritize them, and pilot automations or agents that deliver clear, practical value to project teams and the business.
Report to IT leadership on how AI tools are being used, what is working, and where risks and opportunities exist. Supervise or mentor AI support analysts and coordinate with external vendors. Occasional travel may be required. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
7+ years in IT support, systems administration or digital enablement, including 3+ years leading people or programs, with a record of driving technology adoption or organizational change. Hands-on administration of enterprise AI platforms (Copilot, Claude or similar) and M365 tools (Entra ID, Purview, SharePoint/Teams).
Working knowledge of LLM concepts, prompt design, data privacy and AI risk frameworks such as NIST AI RMF. Strong training and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical limits to non-technical staff. Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-changing environment: responsive, adaptable and comfortable reprioritizing quickly as needs shift.
Preferred Qualifications
AEC or engineering industry experience. ITIL certification. Scripting or low-code skills (Power Automate, Python).
What We Offer
Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision, and prescription plans). Pre-tax flexible spending plans for medical, dependent care, and transportation. Short and long-term disability, and employer paid life insurance. Paid holidays, floating holidays, and paid time off (PTO). Employer-contributed 401(k) plan and additional financial planning support.
Professional growth opportunities, including tuition reimbursement, in-house training, and incentives for professional registration and professional organization memberships. Starting pay range for this position depends on skills, experience, education and geographical location.
