About the Job
General Summary of Position The Inpatient Pharmacy at Med. Star Georgetown University Hospital is hiring a Full Time Pharmacy Technician II. This 40 hour per week position rotates through day, mid and evening shifts with occasional night coverage. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician II prepares and fills routine orders for prescribed medications; restocks automated dispensing machines; repackages medications; and compounds both sterile and non-sterile medications.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities Safely and accurately prepares all medications in the readiest to administer form using proper techniques calculations and appropriate precautions. Demonstrates a working knowledge of the formulary list and the formulary process. Adheres to policies and procedures regarding the procurement of non-formulary medications.
Stores controlled substances in such a manner to prevent diversion in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. Accounts for all unused expired or returned medications according to law. Utilizes automation where applicable. Transports medication to patient care units placing in the designated delivery locations within established departmental standards for turnaround times.
Abides by recommendations from regulatory and advisory groups regarding safe medication principles including look alike sound alike and high alert drugs. Assists pharmacists in obtaining patient specific information as appropriate for safe medication management. Ensures that medications are properly and safely stored throughout the hospital.
IV Compounding: performs IV preparation under sterile technique packages medication for distribution and maintains daily production logs according; Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations including but not limited to State Board of Pharmacy, Joint Commission of Hospital Pharmacy and USP. Other duties as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications Education High School Diploma or GED required Completion of an approved/accredited Pharmacy Technician training program required or Current enrollment in a current college of pharmacy program preferred or One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience Experience 6 to 12 months related pharmacy technician experience preferred 6 months hospital environment experience preferred Licenses and Certifications PHRMTECH-R
- Registered Pharmacy Technician through the DC Board of Pharmacy required upon hire CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) National Pharmacy Technician Certification through Board of Pharmacy approved program required upon hire RPI
- Reg Pharmacy Intern Registered Pharmacy Student Intern through the Board of Pharmacy preferred This position has a hiring range of USD $19.55
