Job description

At Jack Henry, we’re more than a technology company, we’re a force for good in financial services. We’re redefining how community banks and credit unions connect with the people they serve. Our mission is rooted in people inspired innovation, empowering financial institutions to deliver seamless, secure, and human centered experiences.

We deliver cutting-edge solutions that are paving the way for the next generation of digital banking and payments, but our true impact begins with our associates. If you're ready to help transform an industry and grow with a company that values purpose, collaboration, and excellence then we’d love to meet you. Our Enterprise Information Technology (EIT) organization is expanding, and we are seeking a Staff Database Reliability Engineer to drive the modernization of our enterprise data tier.

In this role, you will champion the shift from traditional DBA administration to a code-first, automated Database Reliability Engineering discipline across our hybrid cloud footprint. Partnering with application and platform teams, you will architect, automate, and migrate mission-critical relational workloads into Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Our estate is predominantly Microsoft SQL Server, supported by PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL. You will treat the database tier as a scalable internal product—delivering self-service platforms, automated data durability, and resilient high-availability architectures. Mission & Impact Database as Code & CI/CD: Establish automated, repository-driven pipelines for declarative infrastructure (Terraform) and zero-downtime database schema migrations (e.

g., Flyway, Liquibase, DACPAC), eliminating manual DDL execution and configuration drift. Durability & Continuous Recovery: Automate backup verification and point-in-time recovery (PITR) testing across hybrid environments, continuously validating RPO and RTO targets through programmatic failover drills and disaster recovery automation.

Deep-Tier Observability: Define database-specific SLIs/SLOs that move beyond raw host metrics to capture real user impact—tracking query latency regressions, replication lag, lock contention, transaction log health, and connection pool exhaustion. Paved-Road Data Platforming: Build self-service provisioning workflows, client/server connection-pooling standards, and intelligent traffic-routing layers (e.

g., Pg. Bouncer, ProxySQL, Availability Group listeners) that empower application teams to safely query and scale without manual DBA intervention. Cloud Modernization & Migration: Lead the technical execution of re-architecting and migrating legacy database workloads into GCP (e.g., Cloud SQL for SQL Server, Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL, AlloyDB), designing minimal-downtime cutover strategies and heterogeneous migration paths.

Performance & Capacity Engineering: Optimize high-throughput OLTP workloads through proactive indexing strategies, execution plan analysis (EXPLAIN / Query Store), TempDB/buffer pool tuning, and long-range storage/IOPS capacity modeling. This position may be worked remotely within the United States, with the exception of California.

This position is ineligible for immigration sponsorship and support. Please do not apply if at any time you will need immigration support now or in the future (i.e., H-1B, PERM). All positions, regardless of location, may require an onsite interview or in-person onboarding requirement to verify your identity. What you'll be responsible for: Conducts & may lead the product technical design and prototyping, software development, bug verification and resolution.

Conducts & may lead system analysis and programming activities which may require research and timely, effective, and quality delivery of software into production. Conducts & may lead technical/engineering support for new and existing applications from code delivery until the retirement of the application. Conducts & may lead the testing and review of applications based on business requirements and industry best practices.

Uses best practices and standard guidance to create and modify code. Considers how code changes will affect end users and internal teams. Reviews code created by less experienced team members. Works with QA team to ensure timely delivery of high-quality products. Leads complex decisions, present options and advocate for optimal solutions.

Works with cross functional teams as projects dictate. Performs critical tasks and deliverables. Sets and updates expectations on size, scope, and timelines. Leads team in cross-functional meetings and discussions. Creates and reviews required technical documentation. Maintains latest industry knowledge, practices, and development in the software technology field.

Shares knowledge and expertise with the team. Adheres to documented departmental and corporate standards. Participates in, and may influence, the definition and documentation of standards. Performs other duties as assigned. Leads unit tests and integration tests to ensure the reliability, security, and performance of developed software.

Debug and troubleshoot issues as they arise, providing timely resolutions. May contribute to product architecture. May perform other duties as assigned.
