Job description

Department/Unit: Adult Cardiac Cath Lab Work Shift: Day (United States of America) Salary Range: $84,783.00 - $131,414.00 The Interventional Radiology Technologist III (CVIT III) is an advanced-practice level within the Medical Imaging Technologist career pathway in Albany Medical Center's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.

The CVIT III is an experienced cardiovascular imaging professional who functions independently across core Cath Lab responsibilities while demonstrating advanced competency in complex coronary intervention, cardiovascular imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, and advanced procedural technologies. Working within a high-acuity regional referral and academic medical center, the CVIT III plays an integral role in the care of patients undergoing complex coronary intervention, acute STEMI treatment, structural heart procedures, mechanical circulatory support, and other advanced cardiovascular therapies.

The CVIT III combines advanced invasive cardiovascular skills with specialized expertise in radiologic imaging, radiation safety, image quality, and dose optimization to support safe and effective procedural care. Beyond independent clinical practice, the CVIT III serves as an advanced clinical resource within the multidisciplinary team and participates in the orientation and precepting of developing technologists and students.

Through real-time clinical guidance, knowledge sharing, and support of competency development, the CVIT III contributes to the continued growth of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory team while maintaining a primary focus on direct patient care. The CVIT III position provides continued opportunity to expand clinical expertise across complex cardiovascular procedures, imaging technologies, structural heart interventions, and evolving cardiovascular therapies while preparing experienced technologists for continued advancement within the Medical Imaging Technologist career pathway.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Functions independently across the core and advanced responsibilities of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, including cardiovascular imaging support, hemodynamic monitoring, procedural documentation, equipment and supply management, sterile technique, diagnostic cardiac catheterization, coronary intervention, and advanced cardiovascular procedures within demonstrated areas of competency.

Demonstrates advanced scrub competency in diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization, including complex coronary intervention and the preparation, selection, implementation, and troubleshooting of advanced procedural equipment and technologies. Anticipates procedural progression, potential complications, imaging requirements, and equipment needs while supporting the interventional cardiologist and multidisciplinary team throughout complex and high-acuity procedures.

Demonstrates advanced knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, coronary angiography, hemodynamics, cardiovascular pharmacology, procedural equipment, and technologies utilized within the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Independently performs hemodynamic monitoring using the Mc. Kesson system, maintains appropriate procedural documentation within Epic, and recognizes and communicates clinically significant changes in rhythm, hemodynamic status, and patient condition within the established scope of the role.

Serves as an advanced clinical resource for cardiovascular imaging, radiation safety, image quality, angiographic positioning, dose optimization, and the safe use of radiation-producing cardiovascular imaging systems. Applies advanced imaging principles during complex cardiovascular procedures and supports the multidisciplinary team in obtaining diagnostically appropriate imaging while maintaining radiation exposure consistent with established safety principles and regulatory requirements.

Performs applicable independent imaging procedures, including mechanical prosthetic valve fluoroscopy, within the established scope of practice and under appropriate physician supervision, with physician review and approval of acquired images. Performs intravascular contrast-administration responsibilities in accordance with New York State certification requirements and departmental standards.

Demonstrates competency in structural heart procedures and associated imaging and procedural technologies. Participates in the preparation, imaging support, procedural support, equipment management, and troubleshooting required for structural heart interventions and works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary structural heart team.

Demonstrates competency in the preparation, operation, and troubleshooting of mechanical circulatory support and other advanced cardiovascular technologies utilized during high-risk coronary intervention, cardiogenic shock, and procedural emergencies. Functions as an experienced clinical resource during STEMI, cardiogenic shock, procedural complications, and other time-sensitive cardiovascular emergencies.

Participates independently in the emergency on-call rotation and supports effective team response during complex, high-acuity, and emergent situations. Serves as an advanced clinical resource and participates in the orientation and precepting of CVIT I, CVIT II, students, and other developing staff within demonstrated areas of competency.

Provides real-time clinical guidance, procedural oversight, and reinforcement of established practices related to cardiovascular imaging, radiation safety, procedural techniques, hemodynamic monitoring, and equipment operation. Supports competency development and provides feedback regarding clinical progression in collaboration with department leadership and designated educators.

Maintains continued professional development and competency in evolving cardiovascular imaging, invasive procedures, equipment, and technologies and contributes to a culture of patient safety, radiation safety, clinical excellence, teamwork, and continuous learning. Participation in the emergency on-call rotation is required.

The CVIT III functions independently as an experienced member of the emergency on-call team during STEMI and other time-sensitive cardiovascular emergencies and is expected to demonstrate advanced procedural, imaging, and emergency-response competencies necessary to support complex and high-acuity after-hours cardiovascular care.
