The Department of English offers a diverse curriculum in language, literature, culture, and creative expression. Our faculty foster a collaborative learning environment where students strengthen their written and oral communication, critical thinking, and literary analysis while exploring fundamental questions of the humanities and liberal arts.
Adjunct Instructors will primarily support courses within the University’s core curriculum, including First Year Writing Seminar , which develops foundational writing and communication skills for first-year students, and Experiencing Literature (ENG 201), which introduces students to literary expression from around the world through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama while developing close reading, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills.
Together, these courses give Adjunct Instructors an opportunity to engage students across disciplines and strengthen the communication, analytical, and interpretive skills that support their academic and professional success.
Requirements
MA, MFA, Ph.D., or other appropriate graduate degree in English or a closely related field. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Ability to teach foundational writing and/or literature courses outside a narrow area of specialization. Prior college-level teaching experience preferred. Commitment to fostering a collegial and supportive learning environment that reflects the University’s mission and values.

Compensation
& Benefits: The salary range for this position is $4,300–$5,400 per 3-credit course. Adjunct Instructors are not eligible to participate in the University’s employee health and welfare benefit programs; however, they are eligible to participate in Sacred Heart University’s 403(b) retirement plan, subject to the terms and eligibility requirements of the plan .
