Computed Tomography (CT) Supervisor

Position Summary
The Computed Tomography (CT) Supervisor provides day-to-day operational, technical, and personnel leadership for the CT section of the Diagnostic Imaging Department. Functioning as an extension of the Director of Radiology, the CT Supervisor ensures the safe, accurate, and efficient performance of all CT imaging procedures in accordance with physician orders, hospital policy, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards (ACR, The Joint Commission, ARRT, state licensure, NRC, and OSHA).
The Supervisor is a working supervisor who performs CT examinations alongside staff while also directing workflow, staffing, quality assurance, protocol management, equipment readiness, patient throughput, and staff development. This role collaborates closely with radiologists, referring providers, nursing, ED, OR, and other imaging modalities to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operational & Workflow Leadership Directs daily operations of the CT section across all shifts, including scheduling, patient throughput, exam prioritization, and on-call coverage. Coordinates STAT, ED, inpatient, OR, and outpatient CT exam flow to meet turnaround-time (TAT) and service-level expectations. Serves as first-line problem solver for workflow bottlenecks, delays, add-ons, contrast issues, and patient-flow concerns.
Assumes management responsibility for the CT area in the absence of the Director of Radiology. Participates in departmental planning, goal setting, and performance-improvement initiatives. Clinical & Technical Performance Performs a full range of routine and advanced CT examinations (head, neck, chest, abdomen/pelvis, MSK, angiographic/vascular, cardiac, interventional, trauma, and pediatric studies) on adult, geriatric, and pediatric patients.
Ensures correct patient identification, exam ordering, positioning, technique selection, and image acquisition. Oversees IV access, contrast administration (oral, IV, rectal), power-injector operation, and management of contrast reactions in coordination with radiologists and nursing. Reviews images for diagnostic quality, positioning, and completeness prior to radiologist interpretation.
Maintains personal clinical competency and models exacting technical and professional standards. Protocol, Quality, and Radiation Safety Develops, reviews, and updates CT protocols in collaboration with radiologists and the medical physicist to optimize image quality and minimize radiation dose (ALARA). Monitors dose-tracking data, CTDI/DLP metrics, and dose-reduction initiatives; reports outliers and trends.
Ensures compliance with ACR CT Accreditation standards, including annual protocol review, dose audits, and image-quality submissions. Oversees daily/weekly/monthly CT QC (water phantom, calibration, air scans, artifact checks) and documents results. Coordinates preventive maintenance, service calls, and downtime procedures with the service vendor and biomedical engineering.
Ensures compliance with radiation-safety, MRI-safety-adjacent, infection-control, HIPAA, EMTALA, and Joint Commission standards. Staff Supervision & Development Interviews, hires, orients, trains, evaluates, coaches, disciplines, and (when necessary) terminates CT staff in coordination with Human Resources and the Director.
Creates and maintains staff schedules, PTO approval, and on-call rotations to ensure 24/7 coverage without excessive overtime. Conducts competency assessments, annual performance evaluations, and ongoing skills validation. Identifies continuing-education needs and coordinates in-services, vendor training, and advanced-modality cross-training.
Mentors staff, students, and new hires; fosters a culture of teamwork, accountability, and service excellence. Rounds regularly with staff, radiologists, and referring physicians to address concerns and reinforce expectations. Financial & Resource Stewardship Provides input to the Director for the annual operating and capital budgets for CT.
Monitors productivity, procedure volumes, supply usage, contrast utilization, and overtime; takes corrective action to meet targets. Assists in building business cases for capital equipment, service contracts, software upgrades, and staffing changes. Ensures accurate charge capture, exam coding support, and documentation to protect revenue integrity.
Manages CT supply par levels and vendor relationships in coordination with materials management. Patient Experience & Service Promotes a patient- and family-centered environment; addresses patient complaints and service-recovery opportunities. Ensures clear communication with patients regarding preparation, procedure, contrast, and post-exam instructions.
Partners with nursing, ED, and inpatient units to coordinate safe patient transport, monitoring, and hand-off. Compliance, Documentation & Reporting Maintains records required by the Radiology Department, Quality/Risk, Joint Commission, ACR, state radiologic-health agencies, NRC, and OSHA. Investigates and documents variances, incidents, contrast reactions, and near-miss events; participates in root-cause analysis and corrective action.
Ensures policies, procedures, and competencies are current, accessible, and followed. Prepares and delivers reports on volumes, TAT, dose, quality metrics, and staffing to the Director as requested. Other Duties Participates in hospital committees (e.g., Radiation Safety, Patient Safety, Sedation, ED throughput) as assigned.
Supports emergency-preparedness, disaster, and downtime response plans. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Radiology.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Graduate of an accredited program in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT-accredited preferred). Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in Radiologic Sciences, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred. Licensure & Certification Current ARRT registration in Radiography (R) required. ARRT advanced certification in Computed Tomography (CT) required (or obtained within 12 months of hire).
State radiologic technologist licensure/permit as required by jurisdiction. Current BLS (Basic Life Support) required; ACLS preferred. Venipuncture and IV contrast administration certification per state and facility policy. Experience Minimum of 5-10 years of clinical CT experience in a hospital or high-volume imaging setting required.
Prior lead, charge, or supervisory experience in CT or Radiology preferred. Experience with PACS, RIS, EMR (e.g., Epic/Cerner/Meditech), CT dose-monitoring software, and power injectors required. Experience supporting ACR CT accreditation preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of CT physics, cross-sectional anatomy, contrast pharmacology, and radiation safety/ALARA principles.
Strong working knowledge of Joint Commission, ACR, ARRT, HIPAA, EMTALA, NRC, and OSHA standards. Demonstrated leadership, coaching, conflict-resolution, and team-building skills. Effective written and verbal communication skills with patients, staff, physicians, and executive leadership. Proficient with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, staffing/scheduling systems, and productivity dashboards.
Ability to make sound clinical and operational decisions under pressure. Commitment to service excellence, patient safety, and continuous improvement. Physical & Environmental Demands Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; frequent bending, reaching, and twisting. Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs and to assist in transferring patients (with mechanical aids and team lifts) up to 250+ lbs.
Manual dexterity for IV starts, positioning, and equipment operation. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to evaluate images, monitor equipment alarms, and communicate with patients and staff. Exposure to ionizing radiation, contrast media, bloodborne pathogens, infectious disease, and hazardous materials; strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols required.
Must be available for rotating call, weekends, holidays, and off-shift response as needed. Performance Standards / Key Metrics The CT Supervisor will be evaluated on, at minimum: CT exam turnaround time (ED, inpatient, outpatient) Patient and physician satisfaction scores Radiation dose metrics and ACR accreditation status Staff engagement, retention, and turnover Productivity (exams/FTE), overtime, and budget variance Quality/safety events, contrast reaction management, and regulatory readiness Timely completion of competencies, evaluations, and mandatory education
