Director of Accounting Lead the financial engine behind our next phase of growth. We are seeking an accomplished and forward-thinking Director of Accounting to lead our accounting function during an exciting period of organizational expansion. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in GAAP, commodity trading, hedge accounting, and financial reporting—along with the leadership skills to build strong teams, develop scalable processes, and partner with senior leadership on critical business decisions.
Position Overview
The Director of Accounting is responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and the effectiveness of internal controls. This role leads the accounting team and works closely with senior leadership and cross-functional partners to support budgeting, forecasting, strategic planning, and continued organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Accounting Operations Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Ensure accurate and timely month-end and year-end close processes. Manage the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, overheads, inventory, hedge accounting, and bank reconciliations.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements. Coordinate external audits and serve as the primary liaison with auditors. Maintain the accuracy, integrity, security, and reliability of financial data. Hedge Accounting and Commodity Trading Oversee hedge accounting activities under ASC 815, including: Hedge designation Effectiveness assessments Documentation Accounting treatment Support accounting activities related to commodity and derivative hedging.
Apply accounting expertise within a physical and financial commodity trading environment, primarily focused on oil and gas. Leadership and Team Development Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team to promote high performance and professional growth. Establish clear team goals, performance expectations, and success metrics.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and operational excellence. Build scalable accounting practices that support the organization’s future growth. Adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment where new procedures and controls must be developed as business needs evolve. Strategic Partnership and Process Improvement Provide financial analysis and insights to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning.
Partner with departments across the organization to maintain financial alignment with business objectives. Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and increase automation. Oversee the implementation and optimization of accounting systems and software. Collaborate with senior leadership on financial strategy, organizational growth, and business performance.
Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Eight to ten years of progressive accounting experience. Three to five years of experience in an accounting leadership role. Experience with hedge accounting under ASC 815, including hedge designation, effectiveness assessment, documentation, and accounting treatment.
Experience in physical and financial commodity trading, primarily oil and gas. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards. Experience leading and developing accounting teams. Proficiency with Microsoft Dynamics and Microsoft Excel. Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong attention to detail and analytical judgment.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Certified Public Accountant designation. Experience with Right. Angle. Experience building accounting processes, controls, and systems within a growing organization. Team Leadership This position leads the Accounting team, including: Assistant Controller Three Senior Accountants Three Staff Accountants Work Environment Open-office environment Trade floor environment Regular use of computers and financial systems Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a desk Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally Must be able to access and navigate all departments within the organization’s facilities Travel Travel is expected to be rare—approximately 1%.
