Classroom Facilitator for a 10-year-old, neurodiverse boy in Paarl
Job description
We are seeking a dedicated school facilitator for a bright and sociable 10‑year‑old boy who is neurodiverse and thrives with a relational, child‑led approach. He enjoys being active outdoors, playing rugby, soccer, and archery, as well as story time and building Lego. The facilitator will play a key role in supporting his confidence, independence, and daily learning journey.
If you are willing to commit to this role as a stable, long-term source of support, and have the maturity, initiative, and empathy to work independently while respecting the child and family’s unique support needs, this role may suit you perfectly. Social and academic facilitation, as well as educational activities during school holidays are required.
Main Purpose of the Job To provide consistent support to a child during the school day, extramural activities and school holidays, guiding him academically, socially, and emotionally. Being proactive in identifying when scaffolding is needed to support his learning, social interactions, and confidence while also encouraging independence and self-esteem.
Job Objectives
- Build a trusting relationship with the child, his teachers, and parents.
- Attend school with him daily to provide scaffolding and support across subjects, social interactions and extramural activities.
- Act as a communication bridge between teachers, parents, and the multidisciplinary team.
- Break down tasks, chunk information, and support literacy and writing challenges.
- Encourage independence, confidence, and resilience in both academic and social contexts.
- Support executive functioning skills such as organisation, problem-solving, and self-regulation.
- Adapt approaches flexibly to meet daily variations in mood and engagement.
- Pre-empt triggers to reduce anxiety and help the child navigate social cues.
- Provide proactive, detailed daily feedback to parents on progress and challenges.
- Facilitate educational and social activities during school holidays. Requirements General Requirements
- Fluency in Afrikaans and English – Essential.
- Own reliable transport/Driver’s license – Essential.
- Must live within 10km of Paarl – Essential.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality to ensure dependable support – Essential.
- Legal employability in South Africa
- Essential Job Related Experience Previous experience working with or supporting autistic children, particularly with PDA profiles – Essential. Experience supporting children with learning differences such as dyslexia and dysgraphia
- Essential Previous experience in a schooling environment/facilitating role – Desirable. Job Related Qualifications
- Accredited Reader and Scribe training (Assessment Accommodation Course
- SAOU, provincial education department, or equivalent) – Essential.
- Teaching degree/diploma

- Background in psychology, special education, or child development – Desirable Job Related Personal attributes and Skills:
- Strong organisational and executive functioning skills – Essential.
- Ability to identify when scaffolding is needed and when to step back – Essential.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the child, teachers and parents – Essential.
- Ability to support social skills development and navigating peer interactions.
- Ability to unpack and explain instructions clearly.
- Patience and resilience in managing fluctuating moods and behaviours linked to PDA and anxiety
- Mental, emotional and physical stamina required for consistent oversight and support throughout the day. Job Related Knowledge
- Familiarity with neurodiverse profiles (ASD, PDA, ADHD) – Essential.
- Knowledge of neuro-affirming, child-led approaches – Essential.
- Familiarity with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, – Highly Desirable. Working Hours Monday – Friday: 08:00 – 16:00 (possibility of earlier finish on a Friday) Benefits Benefits
- Training through the NDC Facilitation Academy and ongoing personalised support from a member of the multidisciplinary team in the field of neurodiversity. Salary Range: R16 000 – R20 000 per month, dependent on qualifications and experience.
