How the calculation works
- Federal income tax uses IRS 2025 brackets (Rev. Proc. 2024-40) applied to gross minus 401(k), pre-tax deductions and the 2025 standard deduction ($15,000 single / $30,000 MFJ / $22,500 HoH).
- Social Security is 6.2% on wages up to $176,100 (SSA 2025 wage base). Medicare is 1.45% with no cap, plus a 0.9% additional Medicare tax on wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married).
- State income tax uses a single approximate rate per state to keep this fast. Real state tax has its own brackets and credits, so treat this as a ballpark. Nine states have no wage income tax at all.
- 401(k) reduces federal taxable income but not FICA. Pre-tax health / HSA reduces both.
