Wells Fargo interview questions

15 first-hand experiences · See open roles at Wells Fargo

Wells Fargo runs two clearly separate hiring machines. In India its campus pipeline for Technology, Analyst and Program Associate roles opens with a timed, no-backtracking SHL/AMCAT (sometimes HirePro) assessment split into verbal, business-data-interpretation and coding sections, plus a short bonus coding sprint some candidates call the "Wells Fargo Fitness" section, followed by two technical interviews and an HR or managerial close. In US front-office finance the loop is a recruiter or HireVue screen, one or two phone/video rounds that lean heavily behavioral with light accounting sprinkled in, and a Charlotte or virtual superday of back-to-back 30-minute one-on-one or two-on-one rounds; group and city are frequently assigned after the offer is signed rather than before.

These 15 writeups cover software engineering, data analytics, investment banking and other roles. All of them were posted under a pseudonym (Reddit, GeeksforGeeks or forum handles), so we could not verify the authors’ identities.

Wells Fargo’s official process

Wells Fargo publishes a five-step outline: search and create an account, apply (they push the resume-autofill path), recruiter/hiring-manager review, interview, then offer consideration. The company states explicitly that the interview format varies by business group and may be by phone, in a group, or one-on-one with a recruiter or hiring manager. A companion page tells candidates the interviews are behavioral-based and asks them to answer with the situation, behavior and outcome (SBO) structure, the firm's relabelled STAR, and to prepare an elevator pitch plus questions of their own (https://www.wellsfargojobs.com/en/resources/behavioral-based-interview/).

Software/Analyst Intern (on-campus, India)

Internship

Received an offer4 rounds

  1. 1
    Online assessment (SHL)Online assessment

A four-part elimination test on SHL covering verbal ability, business/data interpretation from tables and charts, two coding problems on arrays and strings at roughly LeetCode easy-to-medium level, and a separate ten-minute logic sprint that in this sitting required an all-pairs shortest-path implementation. Around 160 sat it and 21 went through.

Covered · Aptitude, Arrays & strings, Graphs, Domain knowledge

  2. 2
    Technical interviewTechnical

An hour-long virtual round that opened on the candidate's AI/ML project (model choice, preprocessing, evaluation), moved to a k-th-largest-element problem where the interviewer pushed for a space-optimised alternative to the heap solution, then closed on core CS: routing and TCP versus UDP, process versus thread, zombie and orphan processes, deadlocks and OOP.

Covered · Past projects, Data structures & algorithms, Operating systems, Networking, OOP

  3. 3
    Technical interviewTechnical

A harder second hour, heavy on cross-questioning. The interviewer proposed improvements to the candidate's ML project and asked how they would be implemented, framed fresh problem statements to test approach rather than final code, and revisited core CS plus academic record.

Covered · Data structures & algorithms, Past projects, Operating systems, DBMS

  4. 4
    HR interviewBehavioral

A relaxed 15-20 minute conversational close on background, strengths and weaknesses, motivation for the degree and the college, why Wells Fargo, other processes in flight, and what the candidate knew about the firm's business and competitors.

    Covered · Behavioral, Domain knowledge

New grad

Received an offer4 rounds

  1. 1
    Online assessment (SHL)Online assessment

Covered · Aptitude, Arrays & strings, Puzzles

  2. 2
    Technical interviewTechnical

Roughly 75 minutes. Opened with 10-15 minutes on a prior internship project and its tech choices, then three coded problems (longest non-repeating substring, queue from two stacks, palindrome check) each requiring a brute-force and an optimised solution. Theory ranged over SQL injection, why OOP matters, threads versus processes and daemon threads, HTML/CSS/DOM, HTTP PUT versus PATCH, real-time versus time-sliced operating systems, and how to scale a MySQL-backed site without moving to NoSQL.

Covered · Past projects, Data structures & algorithms, OOP, Concurrency, API design, Operating systems, DBMS

  3. 3
    Technical interview (in person)Technical

A 30-40 minute in-person round with a senior interviewer that started on Dijkstra and BFS applications, moved into suggested improvements to the candidate's projects, and then drifted into personal interest in equity markets: how the candidate researches companies before investing and what parameters they weigh. Academic dips were questioned directly.

Covered · Graphs, Past projects, DBMS, Domain knowledge

  4. 4
    HR interview (in person)Behavioral

A 20-25 minute conversational round on family background, biggest achievement, how professors would describe the candidate, strengths mapped to the role, location preference, entrance-exam rank, and the soft skills gained during an internship.

    Covered · Behavioral, STAR stories

A brisk 30-minute round mixing a simple coding task, a classic profit-and-forfeit word problem, front-end questions on why React and Node pair together and what happens when a React app boots, state versus props, a SQL query for employees above their department average, and swapping two numbers without a temporary variable.

Covered · Arrays & strings, Aptitude, SQL, Past projects

  3. 3
    Managerial interviewHiring manager

A 45-50 minute round where the manager walked the whole resume, challenged the tech-stack choices, proposed edge cases to see how the candidate reasoned, set three pattern-printing exercises, then asked SQL versus NoSQL and standard motivation and goals questions. The candidate did not clear this round.
