Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering
Job description
The John J. Boswell Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of Missouri, Columbia (MU)
The John J. Boswell Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of Missouri, Columbia (MU) seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position with a start date of Fall 2027. The Department is primarily interested in candidates at the rank of Assistant Professor; however, exceptional candidates at the rank of Associate and Full Professor may also be considered. The MAE Department seeks candidates whose research and teaching expertise will advance its growing Aerospace Engineering program. The successful candidate will establish a robustly funded research program of national visibility, contribute to undergraduate and graduate education, mentor students, and collaborate across disciplinary boundaries within the department, College of Engineering, and University. Areas of interest may include but are not limited to aerodynamics; aerospace structures; guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C); propulsion; space systems; and related emerging areas. Particular consideration will be given to candidates whose work complements existing departmental strengths while creating new opportunities for interdisciplinary research and external funding. Because the MAE Department is expanding its newly established undergraduate Aerospace Engineering program, successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to its strategic vision and shaping its development. Teaching responsibilities will be aligned with the candidate’s expertise and may include courses in aerodynamics, propulsion, aerospace structures, flight mechanics and control, and aerospace systems design. The MAE Department is one of MU Engineering's largest, fastest-growing, and research-active departments. Our dynamic growth is led by faculty focused on multi-disciplinary research, vibrant student design teams, a newly renovated engineering design lab where students gain hands-on engineering training, and robust engagement with industrial partners. The MAE Department helps drive the college's growth through major university initiatives, including cross-disciplinary research in the Payne Energy Innovation Center, the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) paired with our Nuclear Engineering minor, the Materials Science & Engineering Institute, the NextGen Precision Health Initiative, and the many research core instrumentation facilities. Together, these resources and initiatives position MU at the forefront of energy, materials, and health research.
