ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR DESCRIPTION The Counselor provides academic, personal, and social/emotional support, as well as college and career counseling and guidance to students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Credential Valid California Pupil Personnel Services credential authorizing service as a school counselor. WORK YEAR 201 days, 8 hours per day (exclusive of 30-minute lunch), to be worked between July 1 and June 30. The work year follows the negotiated "Counselor Attendance Calendar." SALARY SCHEDULE Placement on the Counselor Salary Schedule depending upon training and experience. The current annual salary range for full-time counselors is $69,128.00 to $129,670.00. The District accepts up to 11 years of contractual service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Help students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
Work effectively with community organizations. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned. Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate an ASCA National Model aligned school counseling program in the areas of academic and personal/social development Abide by the ASCA Ethical Standards for Professional School Counseling Pursue professional growth and participate in local, state and national school counseling related conferences and workshops Utilize technology and data-based systems to make decisions regarding the school counseling program.
Use data to develop strategies for closing the achievement gap and implement intentional school counseling activities Consult and collaborate with school personnel on Comprehensive Student Support Teams such as SART, SST, IEP, and section 504 teams Collaborate with school personnel to facilitate smooth transitions from elementary school to middle school Establish a planning calendar for school counseling program activities.
Use the majority of time providing direct services through the school counseling curriculum, individual student planning and preventive and responsive services with remaining time in program management, system support and accountability Implement Restorative Practice Circles groups geared developmentally appropriate, prevention-oriented classroom lessons and group activities including conflict resolution, crisis intervention, school connectedness and resiliency skills for all students Implement developmentally appropriate, intervention-oriented individual and small group activities for students who are most in need as indicated by risk factors.
These factors include, but are not limited to: poor attendance, personal/social issues, stress, home issues, substance abuse, anger/self-control issues, gang issues, bullying, school safety and discipline violations Serve as an integral part of the PBIS team, assisting with the schoolwide plan for improving behavior and providing intervention to all students, as needed.
This includes assisting with the development of PBIS strategies such as Check-in, Check-out, and other research-based strategies. Provide small groups, Restorative Justice Circles opportunities for community building to address unwanted behaviors in the classroom and play yard and repair direct harm and trust. Conduct a mid-year and annual program assessment to measure the effectiveness of the school counseling program, sharing results with stakeholders Communicate, establish and maintain effective relationships with administrators, teachers, school staff, students and parents through activities such as parent/teacher/student conferences, serving on committees and observing students in the classroom Monitor student progress utilizing data, making a direct distinct connection to the academic, career and personal/social success of all students Conduct a cumulative records review for all new, transitioning or at-promise students to determine appropriate program services Discuss test results with students and parents and their implications for educational planning Inform students and their parents of appropriate school and community resources.
Provide parent workshops with various topics to support and create social-emotional stability both at home and at school Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students cope effectively personally, socially, academically, and family concerns. Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
Update and maintain confidential student records, including student files. Attend and assist when necessary with school events such as musical programs, athletics, student recognition ceremonies, promotion, and open house. Perform other related duties as assigned by District and Site Administration KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and manage time.
Maintains a positive attitude towards students, learning, and teaching. Ability to observe and evaluate student activities. Ability to cope with multiple tasks. Ability to drive to sites to communicate and meet with staff and students. Knowledge of, and ability to use, computer-based programs. Ability to communicate effectively by providing clear, concise instruction using both academic and plain language.
Ability to listen without bias and provide appropriate feedback. Ability to demonstrate proficiency in written and oral English. Knowledge of methods for effective collaboration and the ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders. Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, economic, and disability groups.
Demonstrate understanding, patience, and approachability toward students, parents, and colleagues. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication and problem-solving skills. Oral and written proficiency in a second language preferred. Knowledge and understanding of the California Standards for School Counseling Profession and the American School Counselor Association program.
SUPERVISION Under the direct supervision of the Principal or designee.
