Emergency Shelter Case Manager
Job description
Who We Are
Mel Trotter Ministries is a faith-based, nonprofit organization committed to providing safe shelter and supportive services to individuals experiencing homelessness. We work to create a structured, respectful environment where each person is treated with dignity and care.
Our approach is rooted in compassion, consistency, and accountability, with a focus on meeting immediate needs while supporting long-term stability. Through collaboration and a shared sense of purpose, our team works each day to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.
The Work That Matters
As an Emergency Shelter Case Manager, you’ll help guests in our emergency shelter move from “stuck” to stable through consistent, trauma-informed case management that meets people where they are.
Key responsibilities
- Provide guest-centered stabilization support and individualized goal planning
- Help guests navigate housing options, community resources, and next-step referrals
- Collaborate with guest services teams and interdisciplinary partners to keep care coordinated
- Maintain accurate, timely documentation in HMIS and related systems; support data integrity and reporting needs
Required qualifications/skills:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred (or equivalent related experience)
- 3+ years serving an underserved population
- Trauma-informed communication and de-escalation skills
- Strong HMIS knowledge; proficient with Microsoft Office and Resident Tracker (or able to learn quickly)
- Organized, detail-oriented, able to work independently and juggle priorities
A Day, In Motion
You’ll start on-site in Grand Rapids, checking the day’s priorities and connecting with teammates so everyone’s on the same page. Between guest conversations, you’ll carve out focused time to update HMIS and keep notes clean, current, and useful. You’ll pivot smoothly—maybe a quick huddle with an interdisciplinary partner, then back to supporting someone as they map out their next steps. Throughout the day, you’ll balance calm presence with forward progress, keeping things organized while staying grounded in empathy. By wrap-up, you’ll have a clear plan for tomorrow and the satisfaction of measurable movement toward stability.
Perks That Matter
Medical, dental, and vision insurance (comprehensive), plus employer-paid life insurance and disability coverage. You’ll also have a Flexible Spending Account, 403(b) with employer match, and an Employee Assistance Program. Time to recharge is covered with paid time off and holidays. Day-to-day perks include paid meals, a snack/drink room, and employee discounts. We also support your growth through professional development opportunities—along with the chance to make a meaningful impact through a Christ-centered mission.
If you're ready to bring steady support, clear documentation, and real hope to the shelter floor, apply today!
